TWTD weather geeks - this has been an odd year hasn't it? 08:54 - Jul 24 with 1472 viewsDubtractor

As I get older I find myself falling into the British stereo-type of being obsessive about the weather, and this year has been a pretty odd one so far, at least in Suffolk anyway.

Weather systems seem to set in and hang around for ages. April and May, when it should have been warming up, it stayed really cold and rained a lot. June was like a hot August, crazy heat all month and barely a drop of rain, with the garden looking a mess by the end of the month. July has been absolutely dismal for anyone hoping for sun and warmth - raining again as I write.

I'm assuming the resident gardeners will be particularly aware of this. I'm reluctant to say with certainty that climate change is the reason, but we do increasingly seem to be seeing less 'normal' seasons.

Just a small pedantic point on your last paragraph - global heating is the reason and climate change is the result...

No sign of an improvement until perhaps the second week of August. Feeling your pain, so few ride on mower days.

Can be very localised as well, had a warm June although periodic downpours rather than drought conditions (Herts). But as for rain in a british summer being unusual, i wish....

Not saying that the rain is unusual - more than the weather systems seem to set in and stick there. We had the same last year with that mad July and August with zero rain and record temperatures.

My view is that odd weather patterns have been going on for the last two or three years, at least where I live, with, say, long periods of drought, interspersed with quite intensive rain.

And a magnolia tree we had has died off, I think because a couple of years ago we had long period in spring with a succession of frosts followed each day by intense sunshine.

It's not just rain, but really heavy downpours. Never known a time like the last couple of years for dealing with weather related leaks and damage to buildings.

Contrary to popular belief, U don't think we've bought anywhere near enough land rovers & patio heaters

I've noticed, especially in the past few years that we have lost our seasons, we seemed to have morphed into one now.

Remember as a child, winters were bitter and Summer was really hot.

Seems like we have a regular 18/19 degrees all year round now.

It does seem to be the case, empirically, but I'm never sure whether it's confirmation bias in myself.

What you can't have any doubt about is the hard data of disproportionately massive jumps (in temperature records particularly, but not exclusively) and step changes which look worryingly like interconnected system destabilisation effects to me.

It's not just here either. I was in China at the end of June and their rainy season apparently used to be very distinct and the end date could be accurately predicted. The availability of particular local fruit is so closely tied to it, they call it 'plum rain'.

It's not predictable any more. It absolutely bucketed down on several occasions when we were there and that's 2-3 weeks later than would 'normally' be expected as the seasons become more blurred.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Omega block. The jet stream is stuck, we are on the cold side, while southern Europe cooks. I did see a run from one weather model suggesting an extremely hot second week of August….the only issue is that it’s an outlier.

In the far east of the county we missed that flaming June. While the rest of you were getting burnt to a crisp we were sitting under a month long North Sea cloud bank.
So summer so far has been disappointing.
