I was intrigued by the money being spent on Carbon Capture technology

Basically isnt that what a tree does?

It's what a tree does, but carbon capture technology doesn't (because it doesn't exist in any meaningful sense)

and all the proposals for such technology that I have seen would require electricity to run.

Even if that electricity was from entirely green sources it would be more efficiently used powering stuff without producing CO2 rather than cleaning up CO2. Until such a time as we have a surplus of the green stuff at any rate.

so basically a load of people, probably friends of Tories, will get shedloads of out money to develop something thats worked for 1000's of years for free?

Yes but trees arent fairing very well in all these fires. The soil captures alot and theres a very big argument to stop ploughing fields over as this releases a huge amount each year

No, they'll get shedloads of money to 'develop' something which is essentially non-existent.

Sure. And we need to plant more of them, and somehow manage not to cut down so many (individual trees in town centres are totemic, but obviously in terms of its impact on the climate and habitats, it's huge rainforests that need to stop getting cut down).

But see also "I was intrigued by the money be spent on electrical lighting - basically isn't that what a tallow lamp does?"

Trees can't suck in sufficient industrially produced carbon dioxide at source, at a fast enough rate to stop most of it from disappearing. If we can develop a more efficient way to capture carbon and stick it underground in a way that slows or arrests global warming, great.

Some might say there is already a lot of carbon underground that we dig up and burn, and that we should stop digging it up. Maybe so.
