Thoughts 21:51 - Aug 6 with 4230 views | Garv | Sunderland come across as a bunch of whining little teenagers, all with stupid floppy hair. Roberts especially looks like a top tier tit. Morsy was everywhere, mopped up brilliantly all game and set Ladapo away for what should have wrapped it up. Luongo was a close 2nd for MOTM. SOL sounded quiet for most of the game. Not the intimidating atmosphere it was supposed to be, although we did play like it for 15 minutes. Considering the momentum they had at the end and the crowd being up we dealt with their pressure pretty well. You'll always need to rely on a bit of magic from your keeper. Burgess and Wolfy got a crucial foot in a few times, and JD was tested almost all game and did well on the whole, but it's not really surprising the goal came from his side. Hirst silencing a few doubters (mostly Blackburn, Rotherham and Leicester fans). Superb run and finish.

Thoughts on 21:58 - Aug 6 with 3831 views | Nthsuffolkblue | I found it interesting the stat Sky put up when Hirst scored which was something like Championship appearances 45 goals 1. I wonder how many minutes that represents and the truly important stat is for us: Champ apps 1 Goals 1.

Thoughts on 22:05 - Aug 6 with 3770 views | mylittletown | 1) We were really quite a lot better than Sunderland going forward. We had a proper cutting edge with incisive runs and passing. 2) Our ball retention was not good for the first 30 mins and the last 25 mins . 3) Hladky was excellent after a nervy start. 4) The ref was very good.

I thought the ref was very good for the most part but how did he not give the penalty and there was the odd decision he appeared to give based on the crowd rather than what he could have seen (e.g. giving a corner when JD cleared the ball before it went out as the Sky replay clearly showed - neither he nor the assistant could possibly have seen it as it hadn't gone out).

Thoughts on 22:11 - Aug 6 with 3715 views | BloomBlue | Broadhead was my MOTM, mainly because I thought Morsey and Luongo struggled to get a grip of the ball in that first 20 mins when we needed someone in midfield to get hold of the ball. Broadhead for me started to try something different and they started to move off him. Intelligent movement for the first goal which completely changed the game - we had more space 2nd half as a result. Then the sublime pass for the 2nd goal Broadhead is going to be key this season But for me I thought the defence was excellent today. Sunderland caused a lot of problems for most teams last season especially Roberts and Clarke. Yes their goal came from the JD side but you have to be consistent, Luongo didn't track his man.

4) The ref failed to give the most blatant penalty shout we'll see all season. Imagine Sunderland fans are bemoaning the Donacien desicion, maybe the red card too. The latter two maybe more debatable but in between he was decent.

I'm not sure how "with it" JD was for the goal, think he probably should have gone off straight away. Might have just been beaten by the man for the cross though. SB

No-one followed the runner from midfield for the goal.

Broadhead for just 1.5m is such a steal. Tremendous player who can create and score.

Indeed, although you've missed the point of my post which is the cross might not have made it there anyway if JD was fully with it. SB

Thoughts on 05:04 - Aug 7 with 2875 views | Westcountryblue | Thought Sunderland had quality on the ball, but looked lightweight up top and in midfield. Luongo, Morsy, Wooflie and Burgess were all winning their physical battles and made it tough for Sunderland to break us down. I'm interested to see where this squad can get to with Walton and Clarke back, alongside 2-3 more quality additions. You can see we are so well coached.

The EADT did an article very recently about Hirst and his championship experience and it was ( in terms of actual minutes played), ridiculously few.

Probably 2 penalties to be fair, although ours was definitely more blatant

Yep, wouldn’t surprise me if the ref was shown the Sunderland one at half time and realised he probably should have given it and that was in his thinking when he ignored our blatant penalty appeal

Thoughts on 09:16 - Aug 7 with 2176 views | brazil1982 | Fair summary. SOL always goes quiet once the momentum fades, but you could say that of most grounds. First game of the season, Sunderland are really going to come at you but that level of intensity can't last. I noticed one of their players (Neil?) shouting at the Ref, "You're crap, you're crap, you're sh!t" which is a yellow, possibly red card. Ref didn't even talk to him. Spineless.

Haldky did well especially late on nervy start as you said I also thought he should have done better with the save that led to Bellingham missing their big chance to take the lead he should have been able to push the ball wide instead of back into the danger area .

Didn't think that was a pen, he paused and waited for the contact, it's a contact sport still(Just!) ...the right call from the ref but brave at the same time you could say..

I saw the excellent advantage he gave us, which resulted in our second goal. I am not sure that our penalty claims were any stronger than theirs. Both correct decisions, although both could well have been given.

Well for me theirs was debatable and could well have been given ours was nailed on defender does not touch the ball does not get anywhere near the ball delibrate foul for me and could well have been a Red .

The advantage being played was obvious… not really something worth congratulating him on
