He says signing loads of new players would tell those currently here that the club don't think they're good enough.

I think we need to give players the chance to fail before replacing them. Donacien, burgess, hladky, burns certainly haven't failed yet. Even taylor can't get in. Save our money until january and see how we go?

Vincent-young Aluko Humphries John-Jules.

To be fair, the 4 signings in the Winter window were all pretty organic. Hirst had been a target since the previous window, Broadhead was too good a player not to sign when he became an option (plus we were light on attacking options with Ahadme, TJJ, Harness and Aluko all picking up injuries in the first half of the season), KVY was going into the last 6 months of his contract, and Clarke becoming available was a chance to upgrade.

Luongo is the interesting one...you wonder if we would have still brought him in on trial if Evans and Ball hadn't been injured in the first half of the season; could have been a very different outcome to last season without him!

Depends how the season continues doesn't it?

At the moment we played a side who looked at youth and were missing 4/5 of their better players and one who was completely different level last season.

Followed up against a side who seem to be going down the paul Cook school of bomb squading.

That's not to say our own performances weren't good. The 2nd game especially so having watched it back it was a solid performance

But.. we need to see how we continue when sides settle against our already settled side.. are we still on matching levels or did we need that extra quality...

At the moment we just enjoy each game as it comes and enjoy what ever comes of it. ...but talk of not needing new recruits is to soon imo as we don't have a big enough pool of games to make that judgement. And we can't forget the men involved have continuously said they want to add new players. No one even posters on social media have expected lots of signings. Just a few ' new additions' above re signing those on loan.

At the moment its one prem youngster and an academy keeper. I doubt that was the plan as we move towards the end of August.

a niche perspective

You're right, we don't have a big enough pool of games to make judgements on players. We'll probably know more by, say, christmas. Ergo....

Surprised you didn't jump right on my assertion that burns hasn't failed yet. I put him on my list just for you ;)

Cating our minds back to the pre Christmas run where we faltered considerably due to injuries and suspensions and then we had those signings and Hirst on loan they took several games before fitting in and i suspect many clubs in the Championship who have brought players in are having the very same problem. Some players never fit in. We could do with a couple more but it's deciding whether they are understudies or replacements. Judging by comments about they need to improve the squad the latter seems to apply. I'm sure rocking the boat isn't the aim but it's always got to be improvement along with numbers in case of injuries or suspension.

You are right and if you stand still you go backwards. It’s obviously harder to do when you are competing at a higher level and when you have what looks like a decent team. It wasn’t hard to improve on a mid table L1 squad. It clearly is now. If we add to the squad, the priority is to get the right fit of player. Who, how, what is the difficult bit.

I suspect we will bring in a couple before 31/8, but if we don’t I think we can afford to wait for the right people in Jan.

I’d expect us to look for Championship++ quality in Jan if we’re in the PO positions, to then have a real go at promotion. Much like we brought in players too good for L1 last Jan. That’s a lot harder to do in this league though as the gap to the PL, especially financially, is so much larger.

But I’m getting ahead of myself a bit. There’s a lot of football to go before Jan.

Won't the same teams be after those players in January too, who we have missed out to this time and very likely will be up the top too and still will be more attractive than us? What's going to be the difference, they will still stump up more than we are prepared to pay.
We are looking in to small a pool. We have to broaden our horizon maybe abroad.
