Griezmann makes an interesting few points 14:58 - Sep 4 with 3657 viewsKeno

Not sure hes a very happy bunny

šŸ—£ļøJournalist: "Do you think Messi should win the Ballon d'Or for winning the World Cup or Haaland for winning the Champions League?" "
šŸ—£ļøGriezmann: "Winning the Champions League is overrated, even Celtic has one, plus that competition is full of corruption, Atletico Madrid was brazenly robbed of two finals and the press hid it. Whole lotta mafia in that dirty cup.
The World Cup is played every 4 years and there are knockouts that last three years, there is no comparison, only the good players stand out in World Cups.
Also the best in the world was Messi and the best of the champions was De Bruyne and Rodri. Please don't confuse a great scorer with a great player.".

He’s not wrong. Liverpool won it loads by beating Club Bruges and Dutch teams and other nobodies.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

But they had to win what we now call the Premier League to get through to the competition.

I think Celtic winning the European Cup with players born within about 30 miles radius, or Forest, or the great Ajax side, is more of an achievement than tedious Bayern/Real/oil money clubs winning the bloated Champions League as if they're entitled to it.

You can buy league titles, you can’t buy world cups, that’s the point he’s making.

He is wrong. At least in his analysis if not in his conclusion. He's being asked about NOW. He's not being asked whether Alan Hansen should have won some award in the past. He's being asked about the current Champions League in the context of a current Ballon D'Or competition. Dredging up Celtic is totally irrelevant.

It's an interesting debate to compare how hard it is to win the current Champions League (given that you only have to finish 4th to qualify) versus winning the old European Cup, where there were clearly more soft teams deep in the competition, but all of the champions were there, and you had to be champions even to get there.

The physical cup is the same, but it's a very different competition from how is was in the 1960s - 90s. He's plainly just bitter because he never managed to win it. I dare say the World Cup was a little easier to win in 1930 when there were only 13 teams once mighty Siam withdrew and Egypt literally missed the boat to get there. But that has no bearing on a 21st century ballon d'or debate.

I don't disagree that you'd rather win a WC than a CL, but you face a higher number of top teams in winning a CL than in winning a WC, even if you ignore "qualifying". Argentina played very well in 2022, and I was delighted for Messi, but the only decent teams they played were Netherlands, Croatia and France. France were excellent but the other two were shadows of their former selves (and even their former selves never won the thing).

It's hardly surprising that a guy who won the world cup and failed to win the Champions League should argue that the latter is far less important.

His mean-spirited comments implying Haaland is not a great player will not age well.

You just watch. In ten years time, Saudi Arabia will have a load of naturalised citizens who just happen to be a World Cup winning side. International competition is a mockery already, in large parts.

Did they? I thought the top 3 or 4 qualify for it which rather make it a nonsense calling it the Champions League. Or am I about to get a whoosh?

Anyway I think they should rename it from the Champions League to "the top 3 or 4 teams league" or the "Champions and several others League".

I dunno, you can host the World Cup if you are junta/dictator/murderous despot. Suggesting UEFA is corrupt but somehow the FIFA World Cup is a shining beacon of virtue is laughable.

Buying the trophy seems like a logical next money spinner for those lovely old chaps at FIFA…
