The reason why this is is because Gerrard didn’t profess to be a key ally of the LGBTQIA+ community and then take the money off a country where it’s illegal. The hypocrisy is behind the criticism.

Oh so if he hadnt ever supported the lgbt community then its not so bad then, because that implicitly implies he doesnt support it and therefore its not hypocritical. Therefore nonone should ever explicitly support anything in case they ever get judged against that bar.

Although he's making a few quid, his legacy would have been better if he'd gone back to Sunderland and helped them win promotion, giving back something to his home and the club that made him. It's a bit old school now, but he's a wealthy man already, but taking Sunderland back to the top flight before retirement is something money couldn't buy.

If you can secure your family’s financial stability for generations would you actually do what you say?

You Sir are a fool then. Because most would be off in a heart beat. If you really had it offered to you, you would too. Because at the end of the day you have your families future to think of. Or don’t you want a better life for them too ?

If I'd been sitting on an estimated fortune of £25M I'd have already done that and told the corrupt theocratic bigots of Saudi where to shove their money.

This is going to come as a real shock to you, but:

Some people have guiding moral principles in life that they are not willing to sell out.

Money isn't everything.

Exactly , and as others have said, it’s not like generations of his family aren’t already set for life with the money he has earnt and his current 200k per week contract, or £10.5m PER season.

He doesn’t need the money so why not stand up for your principles? Unless of course they were fake in the first place.

You take a wage from a government in a country that has presided over establishing concentration camps, massacres, partitioning of other countries, rape, murder and famine to name but a few and you’re claiming a moral high ground at the actions of other countries?

Oh wait, you had nothing to do with it. Nothing to do with Jordan Henderson either. If you really were a true moral crusader your efforts to make up for some of the damage done would be top of mind but my guess is you don’t and you’re just another plump bloke thinking he’s better than everyone else because he reads The Guardian and likes to moan about politics on the general thread like it’s really an elitist club for the academically astute and morally virtuous.

On current salary of course I would, but if I was earning £10.5m per year and had multiple millions in the bank why would I ? Already got more cash than I could ever spend and family set, why compromise my principles and expose my wife and kids to living in that society.

Because rich people are greedy.
The more you have the more want.

If you were on £45k here and you were offered £140k tax free money over there, with the chance to fly home weekly, I’m sure we’d all do it

If I'm employed in an industry in which these kind of salaries are top end but not unknown, I'm probably already worth a few quid, so I don't the money of corrupt, bigoted theocrats.

And there's almost certainly somewhere else where I earn similar.

…because when you get to that level your lifestyle will change and you’ll be open to new persuasions and new interests / investments that may take your fancy and cost you a lot more cash. I’ve got a few mates who are millionaires and now they’ve got there they just seem to want to get more cash.

How on earth have you managed to equate an already wealthy footballer doubling his money to play for a club funded by a violent regime with a bloke on a football forum working in the NHS?

Shock horror, footballer goes where the money is !
Get off his back, for that money you would go,so he stood up for a few causes, doesnt mean he cant go and make a living, he still doesnt have to agree with their culture, just do his job, its what he is being paid for. What a storm in a tea cup.

He already has more money than he will ever need. I absolutely wouldn't do the same in his position. It's extreme greed nothing else.....

The answer is in what I wrote. There’s no such thing as moral virtue when it comes to government or monarchies and their ideologies as they’ve all been complicit or are complicit in nefarious activity. Criticising one country for its authoritarian rule and then being paid by another whose growing authoritarian stance he moans about continually on the other thread is pretty ridiculous.

Even if they're both paid for by the state, the NHS isn't the same as a sportswashing venture.

That would work if everyone in a polity lived for ever, no one was born to add to the electorate and no one ever changed their mind about anything. Unfortunately for your argument nation states are constantly evolving entities (and even increase and decrease as a result of migrations which can involve former citizens of nations oppressed by the nation they are moving to.) So, I guess regrettably for you, you are going to have to tax your brain a little and consider some value judgements based on the current state of things rather than relying on a narrative (that might be subject to a variety of challenges anyway.)

Anywhere you would draw the line or just totally without morals and ethics. Maybe a few years in a saudi jail with a bit of torture thrown in just for saying the wrong thing might assist your decision making

So what you’re saying is just ignore the past and live in the moment because it’s suitable. Maybe your narrative is what is wrong with the human condition.
