Axel a low risk option on 22:55 - Sep 8 by FrimleyBlue | Whilst true about Luongo. It was a knee injury specifically. It wasn't 8 years of hamstring, knee, back, ankle, thigh injuries. Clearly we all just hope he can get past it. But I don't see why the luongo and broadhead situations are being used as there's just no comparison. |
Do show us 8 years of connected injuries....

Axel a low risk option on 18:55 - Sep 8 by PhilTWTD | Clearly Kieran sees it as a risk worth taking. If they can get him up and playing regularly then it will be a very, very good deal. We've had things work both ways in these circumstances, John Scales never really got going, but Massimo Luongo hasn't suffered the problems he had during most of his time at Sheffield Wednesday since he's been here. |
Perhaps it’s a case of a risk worth taking because at this stage it was realistically either him or go with what we had until Jan. The other frees available would have all had their own risks and mostly with less potential for upside.

Surely having the same injury or affected area time after time is more of a risk and sign of an underlying weakness than having different injuries?

Personally I don't believe there's much difference. Both are issues. One is just specific to and area the other is someone who's body seems to not cope with football. Tbh 8 years of that. 71 minutes per season of football on average.. I'm surprised he hasn't called it a day already.

You seemed to insinuate that Luongo and Broadhead were easier to keep fit because they'd only had one type of injury. Also, disingenuous to say he's been injured for 8 years. Your own link doesn't even support that. He's had injuries over the last 5 years for sure but part of his lack of game time has been due to not getting games at United, Villa (under Gerrard) and Napoli when he was fit.

Axel a low risk option on 18:10 - Sep 8 by FrimleyBlue | He has a bloody good agent |
Do you really think that KMc and Ashton have decided to sign Axel because of some spiel from his agent. Give them some credit; their record shows they deserve that. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The list is also clearly incomplete; we know he has been injured recently and may still be. I tend to agree with you, Frimley. How does someone go from being lauded at elite level less than three years ago to a free agent and "trial option" for a non-parachute Championship club, at the age of 25? The answer isn't connections, as much as this will be a factor in him being agreeable to the move. You don't become a hippo legend without a fairly hapless backstory. However, it's such a unique situation that we're right to take the risk in wages. If his miracle happens and his playing days can continue (is it unfair to think this is his last chance, without advancements in medical treatment at least?) and if historic injuries haven't robbed him of his attributes, we will have a player who should be several levels higher than where we are today.

He was injured for at least a month with Napoli after playing at the beginning. When asked why Axel had been left out of the European squad, Napoli's manager said the player still needed to manage his back. Perhaps he's had periods in the past two years where he wasn't managing an injury and simply didn't make the grade, it's difficult to know. That may point to his attributes having been reduced by the injuries that came before, given where he was and was predicted to go.

Imo if you have a car with a dodgy exhaust. It's highly likely once you fix it all is well you've just got to find a resolution. However. If you've got brakes, exhaust, tyre, heating, engine and then futher brake and engine problems in a short space of time, Its prob best to scrap the car and look elsewhere, as its clearly fked and not useable for a prolonged period of time. Axel a low risk option on 18:03 - Sep 8 by PhilTWTD | I'd imagine he'll be on a very decent wage, so not without risk in that sense given his injury history. |
Phil - he’s surely now our highest paid player?? Given his pedigree. Surely we’ve made the deal reliant on some performance/fitness element? Signing up for a mega wage even only for one season against some one with back issues, some have some risk. But a risk that could have serious reward if we can get him fit and firing!
