about to learn that bit of history?

I use to love them, but my minds gone blank - I can only think of Where Eagles Dare, Battle of Medway, Guns of Navarone....

Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

The Longest Day
Battle Of Britain
Dambusters
Bridge Too Far
Tora Tora Tora

An interesting nugget of info about the film Battle of Britain is that more than one BoB veteran did some of the flying sequences. Take a bow Ginger Lacey and I think Adolf Sailor Malan.

The filming of the flying sequences were mostly done in Spain, though some in the U.K. mostly from an old B25 and proved incredibly difficult to do. The lessons learned were used in Tora Tora Tora. The fact is that films like this cannot be made now. Flight rules wouldn’t allow the aircraft to get so close, which is the only way to make them look bigger than dots.

Lastly, the Ju87 Stuka in the Battle of Britain museum was going to be used for filming, but the cost of getting it airworthy proved too much so sadly they had to use models - and it shows.

CGI these days is great, but it’s still not like the real thing.

It's a difficult one as modern war films tend to be a bit morbid for a 10 year old, so probably better off with the older ones as long as they can appreciate the limitations of those films. The colourised documentary series you can find on Netflix would probably be a good shout as well.

That being said, Band of Brothers is a must watch series. Blows anything else out of the water.

There's that documentary series about the French resistance set in a cafe, that might be worth a go

Another interesting fact is the film crew did more damage to Duxford in a few weeks than the Luftwaffe managed in the entire war. The special effects went a bit awry and destroyed an entire hangar. The Luftwaffe by contrast only managed to drop two bombs on the airfield in the entire war - one of which rather ironically landed in a bomb shelter and killed a couple of Czech pilots.

There was a good reason much of the flying was done in Spain - the Spanish Air Force were still using WW2 aircraft in the 60s - though the Spanish built ME 109s had Merlin engines.

I thought the hanger demolition was planned. It was certainly filmed from all angles.

The ‘German’ aircraft were indeed Spanish CASA 2 111s and HA 1112s, based on He111 Hs and Bf109Gs re-engined with Merlins and in service in Spain well into the 1960s. There were bought by the well known WW2 RAF Bomber Command pilot Hamish Mahaddie.

There were no Do17Zs left or Ju88s, Bf110s or Ju87s in flying condition so they went with the HAs and CASAs. It was a remarkable achievement as leave it a year and there would have been no aircraft to buy.

On the British side, there were Spitfires of different marks available but only 3 airworthy Hurricanes - a bit of a shame as Hurricanes took 2/3s of the load during the battle. There were no Defiants either, though that didn’t matter as their role was minor (2 squadrons) and catastrophic.

One of the reasons Spain was used was guaranteed weather. They had a limited budget and time for filming. Advisors included Dowding, Bob Tuck, Lacey, Bader (who was as obnoxious as ever) and Galland for the German angle. The latter not only flew the two seat Buchon with Tuck in the back but another one across the airfield upside down at 50ft. Fighter pilots will be fighter pilots!

You’d deny a 10 year old the excitement of ‘Broadsword calling Danny Boy’, the mush falling off the cable car and Clint mowing down 100s of Germans? Cruel.

Derren Nesbitt was the special guest at WHW Fest on Saturday. You'd have loved it!

The demolition certainly wasn’t planned - just a cock up.

There were no airworthy Mk1 Spitfires at the time of filming so the RAF was flying some late variants - though not quite as ridiculous as in Reach For the Sky.

Once filming had finished they couldn’t get rid of the spitfires and Buchons - one Texan pilot took a number of planes in lieu of payment. I think they were valued at £500 at the time. They spent a few decades in storage in Texas and he was hawking them around Europe without much success a few years ago.

Bonhams recently tried flogging a Spitfire at Goodwood - it reached £3.2 million but didn’t reach the reserve.

Operation Mincemeat will fire the imagination.
It's a 12A and recent so has references they will understand. It's a little economic with the facts and possibly overplays the importance of the operation but I think it'd be a good entry point.

No, don’t want to put my foot in it.

The other guys didn’t mind him. He was actually friends with them. Curious character Douglas Bader. Impossibly brave, obviously a brilliant pilot he was very ‘marmite’ amongst fellow pilots and later prisoners in Colditz. Liked and detested in equal measure. But he was not alone in that.

As a tactician he was a big proponent of ‘Big Wing’ tactics, supported by 12 Group’s Trafford Leigh-Mallory. Now there was a detested man. These tactics really didn’t work because of the time it took to assemble squadrons. Interesting character, but a little different to how Kenneth More played him in Reach for the Sky.

I have a signed photo of Bader, courtesy of my grandfather who met him on several occasions. Definitely a Marmite man!

According to IWM it was deliberately destroyed.

The Buchons and other aircraft were collected by Wilson ‘Connie’ Edwards who worked on the film. They were stored in Texas and sold/dispersed for restoration and museum after the death of his son. He had planned to gift the collection to him. He died in 2019..

For those interested in the construction of these aircraft, particularly Spitfires, I recommend a tour of the Heritage Hanger at Biggin Hill. I’m not surprised at the value of a Spitfire (MH415 was the one for sale). A recon Merlin engine costs is about £1m. By comparison a Daimler-Benz Messerschmitt engine - £5m. That’s rarity for you.

What do you want to focus on? The history (what happened when) or how horrible war is? Older films do the history well and skip past the horrors. Battle of britain, a bridge too far and the longest day were my favourites. The newer ones zero in a bit more on the soldier's experience and tell a much more personal story. The opening 5 mins of saving private ryan will knock his socks off and the concentration camp episode of band of brothers will get him asking a few questions. If he loves adventure, get him reading the alistair maclean books - where eagles dare, guns of the navarone etc. I always thought the books were way better than the movies.

If we’re including films made from books The Eagle Has Landed takes some beating. Michael Caine playing a German, Donald Sutherland pretending to be Irish, Jenny Agutter AND JR Ewing all in one movie.

Cross of Iron is worth a watch as well as it overs where WW22 was won and lost - on the Eastern Front

Did anyone mention The Great Escape?

Just after the Mosquito’s finest hours (633 Sauadron and Mosquito Squadron) it was possible to see three mosquitos flying at the early Duxford air shows

One of the 633 Squardon veterans is now hanging in Airspace, rather disgracefully painted as a target tug in which guise it last served.

You see to be something of a plane buff.

Care to hazard a guess (or well-informed answer) to this old chestnut….

What feat has been achieved by at least five Luftwaffe pilots - and by pilots from the USA, Pakistan, Viêt Nam, Iran, Iraq, Israel…and even Ethiopia - but never by an RAF pilot?

Second paragraph: not accurate. It fails to recognise that without huge allied material support, Russia would probably have lost. That’s before the war conducted by the the allies against Germany.

It was certainly one of the aircraft that won the war. It was truly remarkable. There was little interest in it at first. Beaverbrook wanted to concentrate on existing types, but De Havillands persisted knowing it had potential. When the Air ministry bods saw it flying, they did too. Night fighter, intruder, bomber, ship attack, pathfinder it could do the lot.

It was a bit of a handful to fly and only the best were posted to fly it. What an aeroplane. Looked the dogs wotsits too.
