For a 10 year old I’ll go with what I loved at that age. My mum was a serial cinema goer so this is a happy memory thread.
1. Dambusters. What the heck else do you need? 2. Where Eagles Dare. Still in my top 5 films. It’s got the lot. 3. Reach for the Sky. Triumph over adversity 4. Battle of Britain.I was already an aviation nut. My dad took me to see it funnily enough in Yarmouth. It was fantastic. ‘Rabbit leader’ etc. 5. Longest Day 6. Dunkirk (50s). The film was based on a book called The Big Pick Up by Elleston Trevor. The film bears no relation to the book whatsoever. 7. Guns of Navarone 8. Tora Tora Tora. Flying sequences - yes please! 9. Sink the Bismarck. Great film 10. Battle of the River Plate
Sorted. The tread can be closed!

Although it does include a very insightful line about why a chocolate cake meant the Allies were going to win the war.
(The Germans capture an American position. They find a chocolate cake, sent from the USA for a GI's Christmas . The German officer observes they can't get proper chocolate in Germany, whereas the Allies have the resources to ship a chocolate cake from Boston to the Ardennes)
Although I'm not sure that is what Keno meant by dessert like mountains...
A film will either be too graphic for a 10 year old, or sanitise and glorify war.
One of the best WW2 documentaries I have seen is, seriously, Al Murray's Road to Berlin. From D Day onwards, but his passion for the subject and the location filming with some of the relevant machinery really makes rhe story come alive.

I would start them with a documentary series.

You’d deny a 10 year old the excitement of ‘Broadsword calling Danny Boy’, the mush falling off the cable car and Clint mowing down 100s of Germans? Cruel.

Another good one is 12 O’clock High. Gregory Peck. It’s the story of a man’s fight to get a ‘hard luck’ B17 squadron into shape. It’s interesting because not only is it based on a true story, but it includes real combat footage. Great film and I did see it at about 10 or 11.

If the idea is to help the 10 year old with their understanding of history I probably wouldn't start with what's basically a Cosplay Bond film, no.
But I loved it when I was 11, so maybe give it a year!

The Battle of the Bulge film is something of a travesty for instance it was filmed desert like mountains of Spain rather than the heavily forested snow covered Ardennes
I’m not sure Das Reich used American tanks either - but it IS highly entertaining for youngsters

At that age I really got into the ITV documentary series The World at War,lots of context, interviews with participants and real footage.
Warning: a lot of the footage is quite harrowing but reveals the real horrors of war.
I think it’s all available on YouTube.
Edit.I notice it’s already been referenced above by BanksterDebtSlave, apologies!

I would have been about 12 when World at War came on tv. Loved it. It’s actually one of the best documentary programmes because a number of the senior participants were still with us to contribute. Invaluable.
It is still relevant and fresh if you see it now. The only omission is the story of Ultra/Bletchley Park which at the time was still secret, but just about every other aspect is covered.
Back to film recommendations, A Bridge Too Far is good. It’s the story of Operation Market Garden - the failed attempt to take the Arnhem bridges.
Some of the early war films like In Which We Serve are pretty good, despite being in black and white. If nothing else they show what the world looked like at the time.
Edit: as has been pointed out elsewhere, Jeremy Clarkson’s three documentaries on the Victoria Cross, St Nazaire raid and PQ17 (Russian convoy disaster) are a must see.

I know it’s not a film but have you considered Horrible Histories? There’s a couple episodes concerning WW2 and they are very good (plus aimed at kids).

Not too much history there really.
Not familiar with the Battle of Medway - I wasn't aware of a daring German raid on Chatham.
There was actually a raid on the Medway. In 1667. The English fleet had been laid up (shortage of money, year after the Great Fire and two after the Plague) after the battles with the Dutch the previous year in the Second Dutch War.
The Dutch under the command of Van Ghent and the great Michiel De Ruyter attacked. 13 ships were burned and the flagship Royal Charles (formerly Naseby) was towed stern first back to Holland where it was put on display. England sighted a peace treaty with Holland very much on Dutch terms ending this passage of conflict.
The Royal Charles was an exhibit in Holland for years but was broken up in 1673. That was the end of it, so I thought. A good few years ago we went round the main museum in Amsterdam. At the end of a corridor I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was the transom (the board on the stern with the coat of arms) on the wall.
I dragged Mrs C up the corridor and proceeded to tell her (bore her to tears) all about this object, the Dutch wars with full animated arm waving. There were no English descriptions of stuff in the museum at the time. Seeing rather humble objects like that allow you to ‘touch’ history and always give me a buzz.

Hes watched very single episode at least 5 times! I still watch them secretly cos they're great.
Thanks Loads all - some cracking films in there that I'd forgotten all about. Bridge too far... brilliant
Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa
Not seen it mentioned so I thought I’d throw ‘Boy in the striped pyjamas’ into the mix
If I recall correctly it was originally a book aimed at a teenage/youth market and the film, whilst it hits very hard it might be in the ‘educational’ category rather than some of the harrowing and gory alternatives
*also I’d recommend‘Memphis Belle’ as I had probably seen it a dozen times by the age of 10 and a very good film. I’d Also recommend ‘Greyhound’ as a more recent film but does give a good portrayal of the Atlantic crossings

Another classic, but probably more suitable for children a little older than 10 is the magnificent film Carve Her Name With Pride. Starring Virginia McKenna it is the story of Violette Szabo who was recruited by SOE. A good tribute to astonishingly brave people.
I like Ice Cold in Alex too, but again I think a 10 year old might find it a bit dull. I mean, at that age you want to see Heinkels going down in flames, 109s blowing up, dams crumbling, warships opening fire, torpedoes, Clint Eastwood with a machine pistol in each hand mowing down the jerries. I certainly did!!
