I fear these types of games. I've gone for a 2-1 win for us but this has all the hallmarks of a shock result and a Soton win purely for the reason that these shock results do happen sadly for no reason whatsoever.

Let's be real here – any kind of result for us there would be outstanding and would tell me that we really may be onto something this season. I suspect we may see an outcome akin to the Leeds game, perhaps being outgunned by a couple of moments from the really outstanding players for this level that they have. Wouldn't be any shame in that and nor would it derail us – I hate the phrase but we're so far ahead of projections that I do see it is a virtual free hit. [Post edited 17 Sep 2023 12:41]

Have an awful feeling that we're sort of ideal opposition for them.
If you're a team that keeps establishing "passive domination", where you're passing the ball a lot without ever looking terribly penetrative then your kryptonite is teams that let you have it and choose their moment to punish your lack of purpose. We like to be aggressive and front foot, so I worry it'll be another basketball game like Leeds and that'll allow their individual quality to show. |
I think it’s perfectly set up for us. They’ll fanny about with it at the back which will suit our high press. They’ll look to dominate the ball and s..l..o..w..l..y move up the pitch in numbers, which will suit our break. We can be clinical with not much of the ball and few chances. Still won’t be easy of course, but I’m quietly confident and looking forward to it. |  |

I'm not convinced their attacking talent is quite on a par with the front four Leeds fielded that day though, and nor will they move the ball forward as quickly as Leeds did for their goals. |  |

All games in this division are hard. Even QPR were a far more difficult prospect than most of the teams we faced last season and they're generally considered one of the relegation favourites. Southampton are the complete opposite, but hopefully we're catching them at the right time. If we can score early it could really set us up, but if we allow them to gain any confidence then it'll be one of the toughest matches of the season. | |

Taylor for Luongo and Hutchinson for Broadhead...called it. Got Burns playing wrong but nobody saw that. Amazed he's made it to be honest having missed Wales with Hammie and the McKenna said he came off with tight one. Assume they think they can manage it and he comes off after 60 tonight. Perhaps with Broadhead having a knock he decided couldn't have both out from the start. | |
