I really hate this line of argument. Suella Braverman is a vile, nasty toxic person. She should not be defined by her ethnicity or her parents migration status.

Attack her for her vile words and deeds. Not her ethnicity.

Otherwise we are saying that she isn't as British as you or I.

It's not me that is attacking her. It is that her speech appears to be attacking her parents or people like her parents.

There is a subtle difference but I fully accept what you say, and would never question her Britishness, the right for her to take whatever line she wants on immigration or the right of her parents to come here.

She's more British than me anyway because she was born here.

Presumably Braverman's line would be that her parents were "high quality immigrants", who availed themselves of a legal migration route. Suppose it's by the by that her 1960s political analogues were just as hostile to that migration as she is to contemporary refugees. The route Christie Fernandes took was closed by successive Labour and Conservative governments, who anxiously wrote new legislation to make sure no-one else like him could make the same journey - the 1968 and 1971 Commonwealth Immigration Acts.

Apparently both parents were big Tories and avid campaigners for the unreconstructed Powellite Rhodes Boyson (MP for Brent 1974-97), so presumably they're perfectly fine with their daughter's antics.

But if you look at her speech it wasn't just confined to what she would call illegal immigration.

Take this passage.

"More than one in five births are to foreign-born mothers. Due to immigration and high birth rates among foreign-born mothers, English secondary schools will need to find an extra 213,000 places by 2026 compared to 2020."

I rather doubt that many of those foreign-born mothers were "illegal migrants".

No doubt many were migrants from the EU, but having left, we now have supposed control of the borders, and she is Home Secretary, so if the Government is concerned about the effect of immigration on public services, why did it allow 1.2 million to migrate to the UK in 2022?

Incidentally, the comment about high birth rates is something that has been thrown at immigrants for many decades, if not more.

EDIT: here's something I've found about the "high birth rates" of Muslims.

Good god, she is literally attacking her mother. In this case, and saying this very much tongue in cheek, I agree with her - it would have been much better if her parents hadn’t been allowed to come here and have kids!

Yes, it certainly looks like political positioning, as well as ingratiating herself with the sort of right wing US organisations that support Trump, who may well win the Presidency.

The UK didn't do itself especially proud when it came to Jewish people fleeing the Nazis, but just as well Braverman wasn't in charge then, or many of the 70,000 who reached the UK before the war probably wouldn't have got here with attitudes such as hers.

Maybe it doesn't, but if Braverman does, what has she actually achieved in trying to stop immigration, given her Stop the Boats week was a complete disaster, and she was Home Secretary in the year (2022) when a record 1.2 million people migrated to the UK?

EDIT: even the Telegraph in its comment piece has picked up on this point.

"She went further than billed by linking mass migration to the failed nostrums of multiculturalism here and elsewhere in Europe. For 25 years, migration had been too high, with little thought given to integration and the impact on social cohesion, she said. These are good points but Mrs Braverman must therefore explain why legal migration under the current Government is higher than at any time in our history."

Take back control? --- my arse!

She's sailing very close to the great replacement theory there, a far right conspiracy that is more or less straight out of the 1920s/30s Germany playbook. That she is out Home Secretary really highlights what a piss weak excuse for a PM Sunak is.

The following passage is pretty chilling too, with the implication that many people in Leicester (and presumably elsewhere in the UK) do not consider them British, a common trope in history against Jewish people and other racial and ethnic groups.

"We are living with the consequence of [the failure of multiculturism] today. You can see it play out on the streets of cities all over Europe. From Malmo, to Paris, Brussels, to Leicester. It is 13 years since Merkel gave her speech, and I’m not sure that very much has changed since.

If people are not able to settle in our countries, and start to think of themselves as British, American, French, or German, then something is going badly wrong."

EDIT: And by singling out Leicester, it is non-white immigration that she draws attention to, something that she presumably think plays well to the gallery.

And it presumably plays well to tap into that theory, given this from 2018 Cambridge University research.

"Originally formulated in French far-right circles, the widespread belief in a supposedly outlandish nativist conspiracy theory known as the ‘great replacement’ is an important marker and predictor of the Trump and Brexit votes,” said Leal. Some 41% of Trump voters and 31% of Brexit voters subscribed to this theory, compared with 3% of Clinton voters and 6% of Remain voters."

But the irony is that our leaving the EU has actually increased non-white immigration (eg. nurses from the Philippines).

Or maybe uncontrolled immigration is meant to include the 1.2 million who migrated to the UK in 2022, when the Tories were in power.

“Or maybe uncontrolled immigration is meant to include the 1.2 million who migrated to the UK in 2022, when the Tories were in power”

I don’t think the record level of migration is any mistake, rather an attempt to suppress wages for their business owning donors. The ‘boat crossings’ are just a bit of red meat to distract from this point. The DM crowd seemed to have turned on them a long time ago, so it’s hard to see who they have left to appeal to at this point (other than aforementioned wealthy business owners).
