Me and Lady Dollers watched a documentary about Eric Clapton on Netflix last night and it made me realise I've barely heard any Cream (or those associated bands like The Yardbirds, Derek & The Dominoes etc.) which sounded like the sort of thing I'd like from the documentary.
I also thought that Eric Clapton was just an old, boring, MOR guitar-noodler, but the doc has shown me he was much more than that (he just came onto my radar at the wrong time).
So anyway, recommendations for where I should start with Cream (and the other bands)?

I guess you never saw them in September 1980 before they even had anything released in Great Britain and were halfway down the bill at Futurama, best performance of the day. And then a couple of months later you can't get your girlfriend ready and out quick enough and find yourself one of the five hundred milling around outside The Moonlight Club in West Hampsted unlucky not to be able to join the three hundred inside when the doors closed. But lucky enough to get a ticket to The Lyceum in February the next year, and smart enough to get up to the balcony because the ground floor was just an enormous unified pogo bouncing off one side wall and into the opposite one. They were truly dynamic back then.
The War tour came to the Gaumont in 83, that tour was obviously booked just prior to becoming huge. Even though I didn't like War it was a great gig

I don't belive anyone really likes U2. They've just been told they do and accepted it.
Never understood the appeal.
Such an odd comment. Just because you don't like something you can't understand how anyone else does?
Angel Of Harlem is my favourite, such a gorgeous tune. I'm not even much of a U2 fan but if you can't appreciate that's a good song then I'm baffled as to what you do appreciate.

Well it's personal opinion isn't it, i get that. For me, I think their music is so awfully offensive to my ears that I can not possibly understand how it can be regarded as music nor how anyone can listen to them.
I believe this to be a commonly held view amongst many people.
That doesn't mean other people are not allowed to like them......but do they really or did MTV tell them to?
Let's be honest though, U2 are a marketing campaign and have been for many many years.

Isn't this a contradiction? Just because you DO like something, you can't understand how anyone can dislike it
Music often comes down to personal tastes and memories that a song itself invokes.

More weirdness.
"I can not possibly understand how it can be regarded as music" - WTAF?
"I believe this to be a commonly held view amongst many people." - no, no it's not. Some people don't like them, fair enough, but it's hardly offensive enough to call it not music.
I have no idea what MTV or marketing have to do with it. I've barely watched MTV and certainly didn't come across U2 through it.
Which musical acts do you like? Because if U2 is so awfully offensive to your ears I can't imagine what it is you do like.

'The digital release made the record available to more than 500 million iTunes customers, for what Apple CEO Tim Cook marketed as "the largest album release of all time".'
For many this was the nadir of U2's career...and then The Edge said something like 'Who wouldn't want to pay less tax ?' at a time when many Irish households were suffering the fallout from the banking crisis but U2 had moved some of their affairs to The Netherlands thus depriving the stricken Irish economy of a fair amount of relief:

I haven't said I "can't understand how anyone can dislike it" though, so your contradiction argument falls down immediately.
Realised you started the thread and thank you for it - very interesting. Not trying to trip you up but music is a personal taste and there's no right or wrong opinion on what people like - someone even bought Aga-f*&king-Doo after all

Steely Dan of course, and early Genesis before they became whatever it was they became. Trespass, Foxtrot and Nursery Chryme are the albums.
Steely Dan stand the test of time better than almost all of their contemporaries. Their first 3 albums were genius, and the next 4 were very good or better.

A huge and broad range of music, you'll see I post a lot on music threads and those posts are usually, though not always artists I like. The 2 artists i posted above are indictive of the breadth of that taste.
I can absolutely understand why some people would dislike my preferred tastes, Frank Zappa for example is absolutely an acquired taste.
I have found many people detest U2. I am aware that on the flip side many people like them. I have offered my opinion, nothing more. A comment on my dislike of a band that you like is not a personal attack on your taste, I dont know you well enough to comment.
Personally I don't think U2 have been anything other than middle of the road dad rock for years (that in itself isn't a problem, I like plenty of middle of the road dad rock but not U2) and feel that over that time the musical press have continued to extol them as continuing to pushing tbe boundaries of music like they are Revolver/Rubber soul era Bestles when they haven't produced anything remotely interesting for many years. This of course happens as bands get older and richer. Having everything you've ever wanted tends to do that. The stones spent much of the 70s and all of the 80s in the Wilderness musically as one example of this. I don't think U2 have done anything exciting in my living memory, you may disagree and that's fine.
Just because I don't like a band that you do doesn't mean I don't like you. Hope that helps.
