...a reminder to you all that, yes, you don't need to be a registered donor, but it will help your family and medical professionals in the event of something awful happening to you and will make upsetting conversations much less painful as well as easing the process of your final act of kindness.

BB. Am I right in thinking they changed the rules in the last year or so, in that everyone is a donor unless you specifically state otherwise?

Strictly speaking, yes. But in practice it is highly unlikely that organ donation will go ahead without the goodwill of next of kin.

What the law basically means is that we get to refer likely donors to the organ transplant service(so preliminaries can be done in a more timely fashion) earlier as we don't have to get advance consent for a referral to be made.

Did I read it right, and that KD was admitted to hospital for three months before the transplant? Is that normal?

Liver medicine is complicated. Particularly if you're essentially supporting a failing (or failed) organ - liver failure can(and does) compromise a lot of organs very quickly and it can be a real effort to get someone fit to even stand and walk about, let alone for a 5+ hour surgery and post-operative intensive care stay(you need to be FIT to survive an ITU admission).

Plus, there's a LOT of work-up and clinical hoops to jump through before you're even admitted to the waiting list.

So you don't want him as a client even if he needs your financial advice, Keno? That's not very nice!
But yes - full of admiration for the work Badger and his colleagues do. I just wish that the powers that be would appreciate them more...

HIs liver basically packed up, hence the long spell in hospital. He was on the priority list from there having been relatively comfortable for the last couple of years. He was back at home for a few weeks until the liver became available.

I’ve been a donor for a very long time now for the reasons you rightly give. I have always felt it should be a default setting unless you have a particular reason not to be one (medical etc). Opt out rather than opt in. Just a personal view.

Thank you for the work that you do.

Presume this was an issue that started post his playing career as I would have presumed it would had been picked up in medicals?

If you would be happy to receive a transplanted organ then you should be as equally prepared to give if the worst is ever to happen.

I’d second this.

I worked at a London hospital which specialised in liver transplants and it was the only surgery that had to have specialists on call round the clock. It’s major major surgery, on already very unwell patients. And it can take a good 10-12 hours. I never got called in thankfully, it was the one thing I always dreaded.

Liver issues were first found in 2002 but the more serious problem was diagnosed in 2019.
