He's one of those Colchester types who think they have a rivalry with us.

Thinking of the games I've watched this season at our level, the only side who have had centre forwards who can do what Hirst does plus a bit of magic were playing for Leeds and cost about £20m-£30m a pop. I think we can sign someone to compete with him but it's going to be tricky to upgrade.

There aren't many obvious options in the UK. In terms of poaching someone from our league, you'd probably be looking at Ryan Hardie. Not better than Hirst but a similar sort of level/style. He would quickly become surplus if we then got promoted though.

A name that would be interesting is Abdallah Sima. Remember watching him play for Slavia Prague a couple of years ago and he was excellent. Currently on loan at Rangers but wonder if we could convince Brighton to recall him from a loan there for half a season of more competitive football under a manager that can develop him in the style they play.

I am sure McKenna has someone in mind though and like Texters says, ultimately pointless us speculating.

There's a chance he's left that attitude back in league two.

Possibly, although not sure he's what we need as he's not really a striker. And I've not forgiven him for giving it quite so large when he scored at PR for Peterborough. Little scrote.

Maybe not as a full-time 9, but he can play there and he's a weapon as a ten or off the left. Would give us more of a pressing threat than broadhead, and the same number of goals (*ducks for cover*)

You know what, still completely and utterly stand by my ‘Hirst is ok’ comment.

Read a couple on here saying he’s excellent.

If he’d been getting the goals this season, we’d all be saying ‘player X and X need to step up when he’s not wearing his shooting boots’

Last couple of games he’s been in a battle, clear to see, and of course the whole team have been a bit jaded and awkward to watch, but his touch has been incredibly poor for most of these games. Not sure he’s mustered a shot on target(?) created very little for others. And seems to have been offside more than Bonne.

The bigger worry is then Ladapo being the man to replace him. If we are to really push for top 2, IMO we need an upgrade on GH, then have him as the replacement, shipping Ladapo in the process.

Don't mean to be patronising but there's no other way of saying it - I don't think you fully grasp what his role is.

Matt Holland on Town TV last night thought Hirst was excellent, excellent hold-up play. I'd take on board what he says, TBH.

And as Herbs says, you'd do very well to find someone who adds 'goals out of nothing' to that in our price range. Saying it's not your job to think of who the replacement might be seems to be dodging the issue to me.

I agree with you, and others, that Ladapo is a big drop down and that he has the touch of a trampoline. So yes, we still need another striker in Jan - to compliment and ease the burden on Hirst, not replace him.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Personally I'd much prefer Broadhead, I don't think we could justify the kind of outlay it'd take to prize him away from Blackburn when his primary position is an area of the pitch where we're well covered. Plus he's a little scrote.

Maybe upgrade was the wrong word to use from me, another equal option, sounds better.

Someone to push him, and equally he can push them on. Ladapo, still a hero for me for helping us go up, but he’s not really cutting it

I'm sensing that you feel he is too much of a scrote.

I love nathan broadhead, he's a brilliant footballer BUT his fitness worries me. I started the season thinking we'd struggle to hang onto him but now it's becoming obvious he can't do 3-game weeks.

Not sure about that take on Broadhead, he's started almost every game for us in the league this season so has gone back to back to back in games. Last night he had a sickness bug so missed out and he had a minor niggle earlier in the season but aside from that he's been fit to play and has largely been very impressive.

He was sick last night, nothing to do with fitness.
