"He gazed up at Kemi, that cruel face, and he saw that it was actually Guardian readers and academics that were the problem. And he realised it was all okay. He loved the Tories".

sorry, 'repetitive smart arse nothingness' fits you even better. just ask gav, he can change it for you.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

If you're not a fan of Jordan Peterson, which nobody should be, then explain it in your own words rather than relying on someone we all know is a ball bag.

Let me see, when somebody says "Nobody should be" and "We all know" instead of "I think that" or "In my opinion".

In fairness, Lowhouse has gone into great detail about why he has formed his opinion, whilst all you have done is the TWtD version of putting your hands over your ears whilst repetitively shouting at the top of your voice “not listening, not listening” and occasionally poking your tongue out.

Which frankly, is even more embarrassing.

He really hasn't. He's just said "I don't think it's an attack and academic freedom" despite a number of academics explaining to him quite clearly why it is precisely that. He is the one with his fingers in his ears here, but I'm not surprised you choose to side with him.

no one has shown how government ministers making critical statements limits academic freedom. open public debate is a good thing, academics should welcome it, and it is itself an essential part of academic freedom. politicians joining into public debate is unavoidable. academics are not beyond criticism. the one example of academic freedom being curtailed that has been given was of someone resigning in response to a social media hate campaign against her because of what she wrote - and she was fully supported by the government and relevant minister. still she resigned. i have also myself given the example of colleagues feeling unable to say what they think about current controversies because of the backlash they have seen others receive - that is the real current threat to academic freedom - academics biting their tongues. and still you have absolutely nothing other than sneidery and editorialising put downs. plus ca change.

I haven't joined in this thread because I don't think I'm qualified to comment. But it's not a choice of taking sides. What I have seen is Lowhouse have a different position on a subject, he may be right or he may be wrong (I don't know), and you failing to respond to his analysis in a manner that I would expect from a ten year old in the school playground.

I also saw Cotty replying to Lowhouse until he gave a quite bizarre example of a government minister backing an academic when his objective was to give an example of a government minister interfering with the thoughts of an academic and then disapearing from the thread when this was pointed out to him.

As I said, Lowhouse may be completely wrong in this. But if he is, at last he is attemnting to ehgage in the debate.

You talk about colleagues, but I find it unbelievable that you can be in the sector and not be aware of government interference and the current concerns over academic freedom. It would be impossible not to be aware.

To be honest all Lowhouse as done is attempted to explain what the OP asked. He's made it clear that he is not an academic or a specialist in medieval London but he has added to the debate and offered a valid opinion. I don't think there is any justification for some of the abuse he as received during this thread.
Perhaps it was a stupid thread title anyway, sorry

i have never seen any examples of it. i have seen public debate, even controversy, even ministers commenting on controversy, but without any consequences for funding or what people can write or research. the only example posted is someone being silenced by a mob, not in any way by the government. certainly any suggestion that academic criticism of the government has been affected one jot is demonstrably false. and your belief or disbelief really isn't my problem.

She didn't just make a critical statement, she wrote to the British Museum expressing concerns. That is quite different and you're deliberately trying to reframe it to back your narrative. Wholly dishonest.

isn't that the right thing to do if you have concerns? communicate with the people responsible. how can that be bad? is there anything to suggest the bm is changing anything that it does or that there is any consequence for the authors of the paper? no. absolutely none at all. her letter to the bm was included in the first thing i posted. hey ho.
