He's been good hasn't he. But he's also showed his weaknesses in certain games of a certain level. Let's be honest hirst in prem does nothing. So depends what KM is looking at in Jan. Also don't forget hirst in our own box lately has been dreadful.. might be better to leave him uptop

The OP says ‘we don’t need another striker’ So I discussed the failings of the striker from the game. Would have been strange had I started talking about any other player, surely? Considering the striking position was the one brought up

We don’t need another striker….. on 07:43 - Dec 25 with 633 views | Mercian | Does anyone else think that Hirst is not upto scratch? He is a good lad and works very hard and does make a valuable contribution but he IMO will never be more than an average goalscorer. Given KM's record of taking youngsters who are struggling for playtime at Leeds and turning him into our most valuable assest I think Joe Gelhardt would be a very good option. With the right coaching, encouragement and a pat on the back or rollocking when needed he could become a very good striker. Two seasons ago he was getting a lot of playtime in The Prem and looked the real deal. Similar to Evan Ferguson right now. [Post edited 25 Dec 2023 7:45]

He's been very good for us this season IMO. I'm a sucker for a player that works as hard as him, but he's also combined the workrate with quality more often than not. That being said, I agree he isn't close to a Shefki or Darren in front of goal. Plenty more clinical strikers in our league, though not plenty more strikers who offer everything Hirst does for us. A January signing with the ability to at least compete with him would be a huge boost; the drop-off is crazy right now. And we'd need someone that does more than compete in the Prem, if we wanted a decent chance of survival. We can say the same for most positions mind you.

Hirst doesn't play as an out and out striker. Imo... No -one has played as an out and out striker in KM's side... The position, is almost like a new role for a forward , imo. A nomadic foil for the 3, 10's. And a player, who's press is equally, if not , more important than his goals tally.. It's a very very unique role, that Hirst plays. And IMO makes it all the more difficult to recruit in that position. As we are not looking for an out and out goal scorer.. It's my understanding that we are playing "metrics".. Eg, create enough chances and the goals will come from all over the front four. We are the divisions joint top scorers, after all. And sitting 2nd as a result of that. It makes Freddies 20 plus goals last season (albeit at a lower level), look all the more impressive, when you consider the GPG records of Bonne, Norwood, Piggot, Scarlett, Jackson, Hirst, in a KM system. If finishing was the be all and end all of what's required from our front man, then Fred would be getting more minutes... It's the dog work that's more important. Our "striker", will tend to get far fewer chances than our 10's combined. Let's say at most 3 chances per game. If you had a player that scored 1 in 3 chances, and was also doing the dog work, you'd have a 30 million pound player in the side. Could Hirst be more clinical at times?... Of course there is room for improvement. Would Leicester of let him go for 1.5m to a promotion rival if he was as clinical... I doubt it.. He is a very rare find, in terms of getting a player that is happy to play that role... Recruiting another like for like, will be quite difficult, imo.. Most strikers are happy to tap them in. But not so comfortable running 12km a game and laying on goals for team mates. In answer to your question." Is Hirst up to scratch to play the role that KM wants a front man to play" ?.. Most definitely, with room for improvement.. Just my op' Merry Christmas all... [Post edited 25 Dec 2023 11:19]

We don’t need another striker….. on 11:56 - Dec 25 with 498 views | OldFart71 | Agree partly but a lot of our problems arise from players getting in behind the fullbacks. I do believe that on order to become a Premier side we need another six players in. But this may have to happen over the next three windows, so January, August, January. I see little point in being another Norwich. Promoted, demoted, promoted , demoted as eventually after selling your best players it becomes so difficult to keep replacing them to the same standard. I sincerely hope we don't fall away now. But if we do finish top half it will still be a pleasurable exciting season. We shall see.
