Is football a place for political statements? 16:33 - Dec 27 with 6244 viewsblueboyd

Morsy and his Gaza/Palestine comments in his interview, is there a place for this in football? Should footballers regardless of their beliefs just zip it about issues like this?

After all, some of his beliefs due to his faith are pretty rank in the modern world.

If "Muslim beliefs" involve bigotry towards the LGBT community, then no, they shouldn't be tolerated.

It's extremely disappointing to see this being given a free pass by so many on here.

The thing is that nothing that he has done or stated has involved bigotry towards the LGBT community and yet it is OK to put words into his mouth and criticise him because he is a Muslim.

Don't have to have any particular sort of belief to recognise that getting paid to play football is a privilege compared to living in a war torn country.

I'm pretty sure the great managers like Clough, Shankly, Busby and even Sir Bob used to remind players how privileged they were compared to their peers working down pits, in steelworks and shipyards and that's all the skipper has done, just a different context.

Leviticus is the Old Testament, Jesus was pretty clear those were the old laws and his were the new ones. Plus Christianity has the difference of not demanding scripture be followed fundamentally in the same way Islam does.

Only for the new hippy Christians

Matthew 5:17

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them."

I always find it funny how these views are tolerated more when it is a Muslim that holds them compared to an evangelical Christian as an example - maybe similar to the whole Israel/Palestine situation with views of oppressed and oppressors

All the Abrahamic religious texts have pretty foul stuff in them.

And rightly in 2023, people shouldn’t be able to hide behind their religion if their views don’t match with modern times

Couldn't agree more.

But those indoctrinated by certain religious ideology would argue their beliefs are from god and transcend those of the modern world.
