Redrawing of constituency boundaries 10:43 - Jan 16 with 2804 viewsNthQldITFC

I can see the need to redraw boundaries in theory (I think), but I wonder if there are well-controlled, neutral criteria in use for when and how such redrawing is done. There's obvious room for suspicion that incumbents might do so in such a way and at such a time as to maintain access to the trough.

Can any of our resident political experts reassure or enlighten me?

No nuance regarding the 'worst-in-history' smearing by the right wing press then?

Thats just what the right wing press does

Yet the best the right wing press could come up with about Stamer was a Donkey sanctuary.

Next up. People are smearing Garry Glitter as a paedophile and Joey Barton as a sexist and a misogynist.

Did the press make him lay wreaths for terrorists ? Did the media tell him to say two British members of minority groups “don’t get English irony”. Maybe they also told him to share a racist mural on social media.

Or perhaps he’s just not very bright (I mean he did flunk his posh school, and then university). Or perhaps all of the above just shows how utterly inept the guy was, and the stupidity of the people putting him in front of the electorate - even after being more unpopular than Teresa May…

Going by registered voters is the only way to do it.

If portions of the qualifying public choose not to register, that's on them. It's not hard and doesn't cost.

Democracy functions best when people make an effort. That's the point.

It certainly is the only way to do it, if you want to favour the Tories, as (along with voter ID) is the intention. As it is, those from minorities, young people and renters are less likely to be registered, something made more difficult by the way voter registration now operates.

The result is that a constituency in Surrey might have a population of, say, 80,000 people entitled to vote and will get one MP to represent it, while one MP in east London may have 88,0000 such people. In other words, the changes, by focusing on voter registration, create constituencies with different populations, which doesn't seem fair.

The fact that people have not registered to vote seems irrelevant to me anyway, and doesn't cater for the fact that there might be a rush to vote were there something like the Brexit vote in the future.

More generally, the Elections Act 2022 is an example of just what the Tories have been up to, which is right out of US right wing playbook of voter suppression, despite the rather hypocritical protestations about the 2020 Presidential election result.

It has long been the tradition to develop electoral laws on the basis of consensus through a neutral speaker in parliament, who would preside over a committee following a request from the prime minister of the day. That wasn't the case with key parts of the Election Act 2022 which were opposed by the human rights and constitutional committees in parliament, the Electoral Commission, democracy groups, devolved governments and academics. They were also opposed by the Labour opposition and the House of Lords.

There is an international norm that electoral commissions should be established independent from government to oversee the electoral process. This is essential because those in government could be those in breach of the rules. The independent UK Electoral Commission was established in 2000, following party funding scandals and a call to modernise elections.

The Elections Act now gives the government power to set a “strategy and policy statement” for the Electoral Commission. A parliamentary committee, which includes the government’s “election minister”, will then examine whether the commission is giving “due regard” to these instructions. It is already accountable to a part of parliament which is usually cross-party.

The commission will retain independence on specific cases, such as whether an individual party candidate is in breach of the rules. But the strategy and policy statement could steer responses to breaches in general. Or, as the Commission itself has warned, the government could direct it to promote voter registration in areas where it has supporters – and worry less about areas where the opposition has greater support.

Labour should also benefit from the fact that since the election of 2019, the government has been comprised of some of the most incompetent, dishonest, sleazy, self centred and generally vile human beings this country has ever produced.

They just have very real concerns.

Last seen sl*t shaming Brand’s alleged victims. The mask didn’t so much slip, as come crashing down.

I’ll miss his repetitive bigoted catch-phrase based posting. Like a badly programmed Russian bot.

This is pretty good - you can look at individual constituencies, see the changes and how the 2019 vote would have been changed.

Had a brief look at those in South Suffolk and North Essex and the most anything has moved is a couple of percentage points.
