We had a referendum about electoral reform. No one turned out and FPTP carried.

But it wasn't for PR and neither of the major parties backed it. I think if we had a referendum on PR and Labour got behind it (which they won't so it's moot anyway) there'd be a lot more support for it. We've seen the last few years what can happen in FTPT, monolithic parties with various factions end up fighting between themselves instead of seeking to govern. And all they really want is to cling on to power rather than improve the country. PR is not a complete panacea but it would address some of the problems with our current system. We might even have a left wing party or two emerge!

No, PR is not a panacea. It brings with it its own problems. However, it makes every vote meaningful.

Where I live a turd with a blue flag stuck in gets elected. There is no point in the opposition standing and no point whatsoever in my vote. Wasted. The same applies to my sister in reverse. If Fred West dec’d stood, or was propped up, for the Labour Party there, he’d get in.

Something has to change. The way things are cannot continue.

Had Boris Johnson not resigned his seat, I would have thought they would have made a last ditch effort with him. I don't know if there any way he can come back other than winning a by-election?

That's a different subject entirely though.

AV (not PR) says nothing about repeatedly changing the PM if you can't agree internally and I don't think it's correct to conflate the two.

Sorry, I fail to see the relevance of what you have written to what has gone before on this thread.

I was just saying there is no existence of actual appetite for electoral reform. Any legislation SB refers to would probably constitute reform.

TBF the rest of the thread is just moaning about 'Sunak not being elected as PM' which is ill informed criticism 101 of British politics.

It's getting to the point where it probably needs legislation. Once is fairly normal, constantly changing your leader isn't.

Not often I agree with SB but yes this does require a change in the constitution.

I wonder if the Tories have considered at any point whether their inevitable 2024 electoral wipeout is a bandaid they'd be better off just pulling off now rather than meandering along with this Zombie government until the Autumn?

The latest poll in yesterday's Guardian showed that Labour’s lead remained unchanged from a fortnight ago at 16 points, with Labour on 41%, the Conservatives 25%, Reform 11%, the Liberal Democrats 10%, and the Greens 8%.

The scary thing is that if you add up the Tory and Reform vote, Labour is only 5% ahead of those who think that either the Tories are doing a good job or they are not right wing enough.

What on earth is wrong with that 25% of people that enables them to look at the last 14 years of the Tories systematically destroying the country and think "what we really need is more Tory government to sort out this mess"? Absolute psychopaths.

They seem split roughly like this:

GE now - the independently wealthy and/or those who see no (further) opportunity to grift an increase to their income;
Wait - those who continue to grift and/or those who are desperate to get on that bus before the last stop.

Then, of course, there is Sunak himself.
