Toni Kroos retires. 13:58 - May 21 with 1893 viewsMercian

He will be the last player born in the then East Germany to represent his country and to play at the top level. Still very good now and excellent in his prime.

I'll miss Kroos.

Which ironically is phonetically the exact opposite of what they would have been fearing in East Germany when he was born!

Make of that what you will.

There are not many still playing from the 2014 World Cup squad. Neuer, Goetze, Muller, Hummels and Ter Stegen are the only ones I can thing of. If I remember correctly Reus was injured at the time.

This got me wondering the answer to a related question: how many players played for both East Germany and then after 1990 for united Germany?
Answer = 8. One of them was Ulf Kirsten, who got about 50 caps each for both teams. After the reunification, he was implicated in having been an informant for the STASI while playing for Dynamo Dresden. (All from Wiki.)

Tho, to be fair, about a sixth of the adult population were informants to the Stasi, to a greater or (often very) lesser extent.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

One of the best tempo dictators in the game. German efficiency.

I wonder what the figure is in Belarus today. About the same, I guess.

Remember when Kroos was the next big thing on Football Manager back in the day.

He still exceeded expectations and I suspect he may get two more trophies before he is done this summer.

I can only apologise - that sort of thing comes into my 'brain' and out through my fingers far too often.

Ter Stegen was not in the 2014 squad. Ginter. Grosskreutz, Draxler, Kramer and Boateng are also still playing.

He might be tempted to play in the PL for one last challenge. Offer him a few quid and he might just be ready to join us on our journey.
