Fortuna Düsseldorf KO 7.30pm 18:48 - May 27 with 4960 viewsBLUEBEAT

Would you prefer a promotion/relegation playoff between 2 leagues rather than the structure we currently use?

Seems more exciting and worthwhile to me.

I would scrap the play-offs now. Leeds and Norwich will never get out of the Championship. (other than down, down, deeper and down)

Can be Quite a gulf between premier league sides and championship Sides.. and it gives hope To a 6th place finish..which keeps The league competitive to the end..

We used to do it here. Well, it was more a combination of that and what we have with the fourth bottom team in the league above instead of the 6th place club below.

They knocked it on the head after Chelsea got relegated amid a riot at Stamford Bridge. That may not have been the only reason but I'm yet to hear another.

Not for me.

The original play-offs were just that, with a prem team involved, but the point was to reduce numbers in the premier league in a reasonably fair manner.

If you added a premier league team into the mix now it would mean reducing the number of championship teams in it, which would make the championship leass interesting.

The EPL would probably love the idea though, as it would reduce the chances of being relegated.

Don't boil a kettle on a boat.

Personally I'm not a fan of giving a club who has failed all season a second bite of the cherry

They have introduced this ridiculous scenario in the East Anglian Premier League for Cricket in recent seasons I believe

So basically only one side is relegated and the bottom team gets a chance to contest the playoffs to stay up, making it a bit of a closed shop if they do stay up

Morally is wrong imho

Just to add a bit of context to that, three regional leagues feed into the EAPL so you firstly have to win your feeder league be it Cambridgeshire, The Two Counties (Suffolk and North Essex essentially) and Norfolk

You then go into a playoffs with the relegated side and one of the winners of Norfolk, Suffolk or Cambridgeshire in a semi you have to win and then you have to win a final too

The three times winners of the Norfolk league finally went up last year, defeating consecutive two counties winners Halstead in the final

Halstead will no doubt win the Two Counties this year and have the lottery of the playoffs again

I get that but the scenario of finishing 3rd and losing out to a team who finished 6th on substantially less points is morally wrong too?

Chelsea relegated through this system in 1988 but ran for another season (two legged play off final) before the present system was introduced in 1990.

Actually, I think you're right. Was that the year, Sunderland (Eric Gates n all) relegated Newcastle?

Don't think it would really work here unless you actually did bottom vs 7th, but that would be unfair.

17th in the Prem would always be stronger than 7th in the Champ - unless you would want to do 17th vs 3rd, 18th vs 4th, 19th vs 5th and 20 vs 6th. That would be interesting!

Nearly 4 good save I can't believe how bad Fortuna have been against a team with a very poor away record and a bad defence.

We lost out to Charlton in 86/87 in the old system when Charlton were in division above us.

I went to the home and away games against Charlton. I just had to google it for the exact year and until then I had forgotten what a crazy system it was back then.

Explained here, I had totally forgotten about the way it all panned out.

Home game was on the Thursday night if I recall. I was behind the goal when Cooper saved the pen.

Oldham v Leeds in the other semi. The maddest thing about it was, despite it being 2 legged, they decided to have a replay after the final between Charlton and Leeds was level, at St Andrews in front of about 15,000 people.
