Solar cell breakthrough that almost sounds too good 09:42 - May 30 with 2148 views | StokieBlue | A Swedish company has developed printable solar cells which are flexible and can charge from any light source (even a candle or moonlight): https://www.independent.co.uk/tech/solar-power-battery-panels-exeger-powerfoyle- "It works in any light condition, it’s more durable than any other solar cell in the world, it’s easy to manufacture, and it can imitate any surface – leather, carbon fibre, wood, brushed steel. It’s also beautiful,” Fili says. “So we can integrate into products that are already selling in the billions of units per year." Looks like Logitech are already using it in products coming out soon and Apple are looking at it for all their products. Some products such as headphones are already available. It's early days of course but if it works as well as they claim it could end up being massive in reducing the generated energy used to power devices. SB

I follow a load of energy based channels on youtube which cover breakthroughs in energy production. Invariably most of them struggle when it comes to commercialisation, they just can't produce enough energy cheap enough to be viable. That this one has already found applications and ison the market is really good news.

There are a lot of cool technologies out there but as you say, making that jump from something that works in a lab without economic constraints to something that works in the real world and a sensible price is usually the blocker. Let's hope this takes off. SB

I don't know but I would think the power generated might not be enough to power a car although I don't see why it wouldn't be used on the roof to generate extra power for running things like the AC, entertainment, device charging etc. Would need to look at the tech specs (which are pretty closely guarded at the moment) to know in reality. That was my initial thought as well tbh and couldn’t see anything in the article. I wonder if cars etc would be built with these all over the car, (bodywork) and like you say used for all the other bits in a car like lights etc so the batteries would just be used for car mileage only. Interesting. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

If all the billions of mobiles globally could charge themselves that would have a big effect on electricity consumption. Its all the small changes everyone can make without changing lifestyles etc that what will make a difference moving forward

the amount of energy you'll get from a few square inches will be tiny. even in full sun i doubt it would run an iphone for very long.
| And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show |

"The versatility and durability of Exerger’s Powerfoyle means the only limitations are energy-intensive devices like laptops and smartphones – although they could provide a significant boost to their battery life of 50-100 per cent." So not the full charge but a decent portion of the charge. If it means charging every 1.5 or 2 days instead of every day it will make a difference across a massive number of devices. For a real-world example, these Phillips headphones include the technology already and they provide 80 hours of playback from a single charge given the boost from the cells: https://www.techradar.com/audio/headphones/philips-new-wireless-headphones-have- SB [Post edited 30 May 2024 13:32]

you're just wandering round the board trying to bait people. it's the type of petty abuse which grinds people down.
