Why are some of our fans so adamant that we’re aren’t going to spend ‘£15/20million’ on a single player this summer?

Because NEWS FLASH… I think we will, and it’ll probably be more than 1!

That’s probably about the going rate for decent Premier League players these days, no?

Now I don’t expect us to go down the Burnley route or even worst the Forest route but I can see us making 2/3 additions and the prices being like that for each one.

The Premier League has changed so much since we were last in it, and these old timers who are saying these are scary prices obviously haven’t followed the PL since then.

Confident in the fact we will still be sensible but it’s a bit naïve to think we won’t spend just because our record signing was £4.5mill 20+ years ago!!

A. We’ve got a bit of cash now.
B. We’re not rotting in the Championship for our 20th consecutive season.

Ok it’s happened a bit quicker than we thought but we all wanted these days to come, don’t be scared or anxious about it.

I’d rather us look in the championship, for smaller fees and lesser wages, because £40-£50k for a prem “ready” player, will probably only get you a bench warmer or a fringe player anyway. I’m still of the opinion that we won’t go mad splitting the team apart and bringing in big fee players on crazy money and ruining what we have built at the club.

I don't think it will split the team apart. After all, Williams (allegedly), Moore (definitely) and Hutchinson (probably) were on that kind of money really - just with ITFC not necessarily paying all of it. Didn't upset the dressing room.

Plus the existing retained squad's wages will have gone up significantly, cutting down the differential.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Given that we are likely to be very ambitious and given the likes of Bournemouth, Brighton, Brentford, Fulham, Palace, Burnley, Sheffield United etc have all signed players for £10m, £15m, £20m, £25m then it’s exactly what we are going to be spending.

I’d say we’d have gone even higher if we only needed the odd tweak. The fact we might need 8-9 players means we may well not exceed that figure on any one player this summers.

It’s the going rate now for staying up. Wolves and Forest, two similar sized clubs with time in League One in the last decade or so have spent £30m - £40m on a single player. That’s where we’d be headed if we stayed up.

It’s crazy because we’ve been out of it for so long but very normal for this level.

It's interesting that Brighton spend £15M on 'speculative' signings.

Some work out (e.g. Caicedo) and others don't.

This summer they've signed a 19-year-old Ghanaian winger called Ibrahim Osman for £16M from Danish team FC Nordsjalland on a 5 year contract. He may become a worldbeater, or he could be £££s down the drain.

The best players in the Championship will be in excess of £10m.

I do understand your point about wages. I think the key thing is that the players that come in on higher wages have to justify it. I don't think players begrudge anyone that comes in and raises the bar/moves the needle for the team. Ultimately, it helps all of the squad to achieve success and get their win bonuses. The problem comes when you sign someone on big money that doesn't deliver or is a bad egg.

If Hutchinson signs this summer and has the influence he had at the back end of last season whilst earning 10 grand a week more than anyone else, I don't think anyone is going to care at all.

I agree. New world. Hit it head on. It’s quite bewildering really, but that’s the speed at which we’ve progressed.

I haven’t a clue who or what we will be looking at fees wise, in addition to paying existing players more, but I’ll be surprised if has beens, cheap trouble makers or too many crocks will be targets.

I think that’s too simplistic tbh.

There’s no doubt that we can afford to do it, but I reckon KM will be keen to keep the unit tight. Expensive players will want expensive wages. Will they accept divisional contracts?

No doubt our squad will see their salaries go up as a result of promotion but I can see us still having one of the lowest wage bills in the division. Bringing in players who might earn significantly more than the rest of the squad is a recipe for disaster as it will undermine the core spirit that got us here in the first place.

I must admit, I've balked at the fee being suggested for Omari, considering it unachievable for us. Perhaps I'm wrong... I guess I still want us to be seen as the underdogs punching well above our weight agsinst the big boys. Maybe I need to realign my expectations. Never did I think I would see the day when 'little old Ipswich' would spend £25 million on a player. What a time to be a Town fan, eh?

I think if you know it’s someone on loan, and the club are paying towards the wages, it won’t upset the apple cart, but when youve got the club to where it’s at, it might not go down so well if your getting £15-20k and they start bringing in players on £40-£50k.. but i suppose it’s going to be a fine balancing act. And considering the way players fees and wages tend to get broad cast it won’t be anything you can keep quiet.

The fact that KMC has spent way more time working ( coaching ) in the Premier than any other league makes me think that he'll know exactly what to do.
It's Div 1 that would have been a shock to him.
Champ less so but certainly not his area of expertise.

This is all just a shock to us lot.

Even paying £6m to KM makes me feeling a little uneasy, but it’s the table we are dining at now.

We either pay the going rate and join the party, or we’ll be soon on our arses.

That 6m is very likely to only be for one year, and if (when) he leaves for a bigger club, that money will be recouped in the compensation owed to us.

The players at the club right now will be under no illusions. They were playing league 1 football 2 years ago and basically all have never played in the premier league. They haven't got to where they are now from under a rock, they all would have grown up watching the premier league just like us, and will understand the fees and wages players command at that level. The players will also understand we need strengthening to have a realistic chance of survival. As long as we stick to our guns and get the right characters, I don't see it being an issue. Complete different scenario to the summer of 2001 for example.
