TWTD weight loss/health thread on 14:18 - Jun 28 by J2BLUE | Brilliant post. Massive respect to you. Already this thread is helping to motivate and push myself further. If you see this Newcy, are there any Protein Works shakes which have the texture of Huel? I love the coffee caramel RTD but open to other suggestions. |
https://www.theproteinworks.com/diet-meal-replacement If you blend it with ice it’s a nice thick shake. Chocolate mint brownie is my preferred choice. They also do a vegan one, I’ve not tried it. https://www.theproteinworks.com/vegan-diet-meal-replacement-extreme I made a mistake by not bringing any with me to the yacht and am certainly suffering for it. TWTD weight loss/health thread on 14:06 - Jun 28 by MarkTWTD | NewcyBlue/Ken has just been absolutely incredible over the past 12 months... his support has been invaluable to my success. He's nudged me in all the right directions. Never said I couldn't achieve something whilst still remaining realistic. And yes, even having books delivered to my house with the message "Read this, then read it again!" It's true to say that I wouldn't have been as successful as I have been without his guidance. I wouldn't have joined the gym. I wouldn't be preparing to run the Great North Run. I wouldn't be getting ready for my first tattoo. I wouldn't be as confident. I wouldn't have discovered how much I love gym life. It has been life changing! https://gnr2024.co.uk/who-is-coach-ken/ The Nutracheck app is really good. I used MyFitnessPal a few years ago but didn't do anything serious with it. Nutracheck is very similar. I paid a small annual fee to unlock some features but that isn't essential. I scan barcodes and weigh everything I consume. "What gets measured gets improved" being one of Ken's phrases drummed into me early on. "It'll become the norm" he said and it's true, it does become just a normal part of meal prep. I started out ordering Huel products but in the first chats with Ken he suggested Protein Works instead saying that he preferred the taste and they had a better carb profile. So I placed my first order for diet meal replacement shakes with them. Day One of my new diet was 21st July last year and it was the Protein Works products that were delivered first. Huel, despite being on a next day delivery, didn't arrive for another two days. I still have the Huel products in their original box, unopened. A couple of weeks in and Ken told me about a guy called Scott Baptie. He had a Food For Fitness website and created some great high protein recipes. He also had an app which is now my go-to for recipes including some amazing currys! https://gnr2024.co.uk/category/nutrition/ I started out weighing 109.9kg and ended up losing 42kg over 10 months. A healthy high protein diet cutting out all processed foods, sweets, biscuits, cakes, pizza, takeaways, etc. It became quite easy once I got into the routine. Routine became very important in helping me form new habits. Six weeks in, at the beginning of September last year, I joined the gym and took on a personal trainer. This helped give me focus but was vital if I were to have any chance of reaching my ultimate goals which were always about more than 'just' losing weight. I'm in the gym seven days a week. I have four structured training sessions (Push, Pull, Legs and Body Building/Strength Training) built around compound exercises - Bench Press, Barbell Row, Barbell Squat and Deadlift - plus lunges, chest press, shoulder press, lat pull down, cable row, bicep and tricep curls, leg press, leg curl, etc etc etc, with my personal trainer Matt. I usually visit the gym at least twice a day and throw in additional cardio such as treadmill or rowing machine. https://gnr2024.co.uk/the-first-six-months/ In just over 10 weeks I'll be heading up to the North East, to NewcyBlue territory, to get ready for the Great North Run on 8th September. Not something I ever thought I'd be doing, but when chatting to Ken last year we both thought it would be something good for me to aim for. I'm running it in aid of Bowel Cancer UK. The GNR is not my main goal, it's just a "bit of fun" along the way. One more thing to tick off my list of goals.

That's a mindblowing weight loss over that period. Fair play. I'm wanting to shed 2.5 stone. Food and drink is my issue. I love it.

Protein Works Diet Meal Replacement Extreme "White Chocolate and Raspberry Swirl" and "Cookies and Cream" are amongst my favourites. I also like their Ultimate Diet Breakfast shakes, particularly the Caramel Latte. Edit: Forgot to add a recent addition to my food diary... (again from Protein Works) Superfood Breakfast Bowl and Overnight Oats. Never been a fan of this kind of breakfast but I do really enjoy them now. Add in their Protein Brownie mix, Protein Mug Cake mixes, Protein Pancakes, their Diet Whey Isolate 90, their Super Greens Extreme powders and their Creatine Monohydrate... and you can imagine what one of my kitchen cupboards looks like :-)

TWTD weight loss/health thread on 22:59 - Jun 28 with 3028 views | Reus30 | Firstly, thank you to all who have shared your stories and it's great to have something like this to inspire and motivate. Also, it's always good to look after each other. I have talked about my struggles with food (more specifically junk food), my relationship with food in general and it can be so tortuous at times. I know what's good, I know what's bad but my brain is just mush. However, back at least exercising which is half the battle with me. Issues with my heart and my back and I am way too young for that rubbish so a kick up the butt is required. I am doing ok but need to ramp it up. Truth by told, I have been looking at the various drugs etc as it had been getting a bit miserable and desperate but after a bit of research, I think I hold off and just focus on routine. Issue is and always has been snacking but the chat about protein works (and the ad in the banner for it...) made me have a little peak. Glad I did, 80% off orders so give some of the meal replacement and breakfast stuff and try and see what's going on for literally the cost of 1 takeout. Thank you for the recommendations and KUTGW. If any one has any more tid bits or books or products or advice, happy to try anything really. Will keep an eye on this thread.

Books The Worlds Fittest Book - Ross Edgley (excellent book for nutrition and exercise) The Art of Resilience - Ross Edgley (it’s about his swim around Great Britain) Everything Fat Loss - Ben Carpenter (science referenced, excellent read) Not A Diet Book - James Smith (really hammers home the importance of calorie deficit) The Maximus Body - Bobby Maximus (some excellent workout routines, and general fitness knowledge) HWPO - Mat Fraser (how he prepared for the CrossFit games, 5 times winner) Apps Nutracheck is brilliant for calorie counting. Stacked is a good workout logging app, which also has some routines e.g. Bigger Leaner Stronger (from Mike Matthews) Food for Fitness (Scott Baptie recipes app, recipes can be found for free on his website and social media)

Their stuff is brilliant mate. I use their super greens too, which take a bit of getting used to but I definitely feel healthier when taking it. My gut is definitely better for it too.

I was getting up at 0500 to get to the gym at 0530. But obviously I am home all day, and it was a case of going early so I could spend all my time with the kids.

Apologies. I’ll offer something a bit more useful. I piled the weight on when the twins we born. Getting up to 110kg of blubber. Calorie deficit helped me. I ate the same meal twice a day every day. If the Mrs wanted a KFC that day, I would either completely forgo, or that would be all I would eat bar a protein shake / bar. Calorie deficit is far more important than anything else. A general rule of thumb, your height in cm is the number of grams of protein you should aim for per day. I posted a dropbox link with an excel spreadsheet I made for MarkTWTD earlier in the thread. Use the calorie calculator in there. It calculates macros too. Have a look at something called the Close Caboo. https://lovetobenatural.co.uk/baby-carriers/stretchy-wraps/close-caboo.html It’s a baby sling. It’s great for going for a walk with your bairn on your chest. The bairns love the closeness, and as they grow you get stronger. Check out Milo and the Bull for something similar.

Pretty good here... maintaining at 70kg whilst training quite heavilly in the gym. Great North Run is now just five weeks away. I'm doing a 7.5km fun run in just over 3 weeks time. Celebrated my 1st Fitness Anniversary a couple of weeks back, and got my very first tattoo. That was another one of my goals ticked off my list. And then I started a new thread here on TWTD :-) The Biggest Challenge of my Life by MarkTWTD 23 Jul 2024 10:12Hi TWTDer's... it’s your resident hamster here. Well, the person who tries to keep the wheels of TWTD turning.
As some of you may know, from some of my recent posts, I am currently preparing to take part in the Great North Run on Sunday 8 September - it’s the World’s largest half marathon - a mere 21km/13.1 miles. I have never done anything like this before and I'm certainly not getting any younger.
So why am I doing this?
It all started on Thursday 20 July 2023 - Day Zero - when I awoke with the realisation that I had to do things differently. I had to make some fundamental changes to my lifestyle. I had to reboot myself and learn a new way of life.
Earlier in the year I had a random meeting with someone called Ken at a Jaguar car event I had organised. Over dinner I discovered that he supported Ipswich Town and that he was a member of TWTD, and that was how I first met NewcyBlue. We became good friends and it was during many long WhatsApp chats that his love for everything fitness-related came to light and so on the 20 July, when I was looking for advice and support, there was only one person I was going to turn to. I had placed an order for some Huel products - meal replacement shakes - but he recommended Protein Works. So I placed a second order with them. It just happened that the Protein Works products arrived the very next day (Huel didn't turn up until 2 days later) and so at lunchtime on Friday 21 July 2023 my "Weight Loss Challenge" started.
It wasn’t long before Ken suggested I should join a gym. My weight loss was off to a good start but a gym would allow me to achieve so much more. I’d never stepped foot inside a gym and so the idea was pretty terrifying so I gave myself a bit of time to get my head around the idea and to lose a bit more weight. Beginning of September, six weeks after starting the diet, I had lost 1.5st (9.5kg) and so I took the plunge and joined my local JD Gym, signed up a personal trainer and I’ve never looked back. One of the best decisions I have taken in my entire life.
https://gnr2024.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/MarkTWTD-ParkRun.jpg
The same week I joined the gym I decided to add another challenge to my growing list of goals - the Great North Run. I’d floated the idea with Ken a few weeks earlier by asking the question “Would it be crazy for me to think about running a half marathon? Would the GNR next year be too soon for me?”. Only one way to find out and so on 8 September 2023 I signed up to run for Bowel Cancer UK. I had exactly 12 months to prepare for what will be one of the biggest challenges of my life.
So where was my starting point in July 2023?
I was 55 years old, 5ft 7in, weighing 17st 4lb (109.9kg) with a 46in waist.
I had set myself an ambitious target of losing nearly 6.5st (40kg) by the end of April - just 9 months. It was suggested that I should perhaps reconsider that goal and push the timeframe out a bit further but my weight loss was consistent at around 1st (6.5kg) per month for the first few months. It slowed down a little bit in December and January due to a couple of injuries I had picked up in training, but it was still going in the right direction.
Back in September I started out training twice a week in the gym with additional cardio sessions on the remaining days. I joined ParkRun last October and slowly built up the running side of things. In November I bumped training with Matty my personal trainer up to three days a week (PPL - Push Pull Legs) and then by February (as I turned 56 years old) I stepped it up even more to four training sessions per week, now including body building/strength training, visiting the gym six days a week, usually twice a day, to also include treadmill and rowing machine cardio sessions.
https://gnr2024.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/MarkTWTD-1YearMontage-800px.jpg
I reached my target weight - (11st) 69.9kg - in the first week of April and have been maintaining my weight at around 70kg ever since. My waist line has shrunk to an unbelievable 30in.
Ken has been amazingly supportive and a massive part of my “journey”, as has my personal trainer Matty. The Great North Run is not the end of my journey, it’s just one stop along the way. I have so much more to achieve.
Last weekend was the first anniversary of starting this adventure and I managed to tick off another goal. I have always wanted a tattoo but never felt confident enough to think I could “pull it off”. Back in December I booked an appointment at a local tattoo studio for Saturday 20 July - 1 year to the day that this all started - to get my first tattoo. It took 3hrs 45mins, and I absolutely love the result. There was already the plan to have another in the future and that will hopefully follow early next year once I’ve put in a whole load more work at the gym!
So why am I running in aid of Bowel Cancer UK?
Back in November 2017 my dad was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer. He received amazing treatment at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary under the care of Thomas Raymond within four weeks of diagnosis and has made a full recovery. Nearly seven years on he remains cancer free.
https://gnr2024.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/bowel-cancer-uk-500px-white.jpg
Bowel cancer is the UK’s second biggest cancer killer with over 16,000 people dying annually of a disease that is preventable, treatable and curable. I’m determined to help Bowel Cancer UK to change that. The money I raise will help to provide support and information to patients and their families, enable them to fund and support research into bowel cancer and to campaign for early diagnosis and the best treatment and care for all.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. If you would like to, and are able to, it would be amazing if you could support the cause at the heart of all this - Bowel Cancer UK. They really do help to save peoples lives

That is fantastic work, you are defo an inspiration to those trying to get to a better place. What was the tattoo if you don't mind me asking? (I know tattoos can be a personal thing, so please don't feel obliged to share if not appropriate) Personally, I have just hit the 13kg loss after a few ups and downs. I need to shift another 8 -10 KGs and then for the first time in my adult life, I will have a healthy BMI. I know BMI isn't always the best way to define fitness as I was a very healthy 100KG+ 16 year old but that was due to rugby and training 4-5 a week.

Good going! BMI is a useful guide. As you say, not the be all and end all and doesn't take into account muscle mass. Yeah, the tattoo... I posted about it in my other thread. It's a tribal Jaguar - links into my love of Jaguar cars, and the community I organise car events for. As well as a nod to how I started on my fitness reboot... inspired and supported at the start by our very own NewcyBlue who became a friend following a total random meet on the back of a Jaguar event I had organised in March last year. Keep going... You're over half way there and have done the hard bit.

TWTD weight loss/health thread on 09:46 - Jun 28 by gainsboroughblue | Indeed. I make sure I do at least 10,000 steps every day now and I find that even if I have a cheat takeaway or a few cold beers once or twice a week, it offsets it and doesn't punish you on the scales. Stick a watch on the wrist and it's incredible how the steps mount up. If I'm short by 2 or 3 thousand in the evening, a half hour walk tops it up and if I'm in the mood, go beyond and get closer to 15. There's some great spots in this part of the world to walk in too. Some that I didn't even know about. I've downloaded 'Komoot' to my phone which even navigates you down footpaths and has some great circular walks varying in length, gradients and difficulty. I do sometimes get to the gym early in the morning for an hour before I have to start work but to be honest, I really struggle to do this without the light of the summer months. In fact, I feel that I have to compensate for the misery of October-March Britain by making a real effort April-Sep. A lot of my job involves sitting and driving so I do sometimes envy those in more manual jobs (not often mind) who are able to burn calories as they work. As for food. I try and be low-carb as much as I can. I eat breakfast as late as possible in order to have an eating window and a fasting period. I've lost three and a half stone over the last three years by literally making small adjustments and maintaining. I started by using the books that Michael Mosley contributed to and they are by far, the best and most sustainable plans/regimes that I've ever used, mainly because the principles apply whether you are dieting or maintaining a lifestyle. Ideally, I want to lose another half stone but I'm not noticeably overweight and am at the stage where I can be 4 or 5 lbs either way without feeling like crap or guilty if I have a blow out. This is an excellent good thread idea by the way. Especially if we can incorporate some mental health support with it, and more than happy to contribute. |
Find an exercise routine that will work for you. It may vary depending on what other responsibilities you have each day, but find a way of fitting it on and try to be disciplined. While exercise is beneficial, if you want to lose weight, controlling calories in rather than burning calories by exercise is far more efficient. I would go against crash dieting as I think most people are more likely to sustain weight loss if they can find a long term diet plan. Often, it isn't rocket science - just try to eat a bit healthier but, more importantly, eat less i.e. smaller portions. And try to avoid snacking, especially unhealthy snack. A good idea is not to have unhealthy snacks like crisps & biscuits in the house. If you must snack, you might find you actually prefer healthy snacks like nuts or fruit. There are plenty of calories in alcohol. Total abstinence doesn't work for everyone so try to cut down e.g. having a few alcohol free days, trying low or alcohol free beer etc.

TWTD weight loss/health thread on 19:44 - Jun 27 by SitfcB | Are you able to share the reason what stopped you from going to games? I’ve just had a chicken and lamb shish kebab and ate the pitta bread and now feel disappointed No sort of bread for nearly 4 days. Been miserable in the evenings and thinking may just sack it off already |
Have a look at The Fitness chef on instagram, he makes you realise you can have the foods you want and not feel guilty but he does it in a funny way.

I feel like I've answered the question of when. Sleep training has really changed the dynamic of the evenings. More time, less stress, and I could easily exercise between 8-10. So now just need to see what options are available to me at that time and ease into it. We are going to the swimming pool for the first time this weekend and will rotate looking after the baby. He loves bath time, so hoping he loves being in the kids pool.

I followed Scott Baptie Food for Fitness on Instagram and use his app to find good recipes. Suits my needs well as I am focusing on healthy but high protein meals to help achieve my goals. https://www.foodforfitness.co.uk/ https://www.instagram.com/scottbaptie?igsh=aTA3OXp2dm4yYTgy

TWTD weight loss/health thread on 22:59 - Jun 28 by Reus30 | Firstly, thank you to all who have shared your stories and it's great to have something like this to inspire and motivate. |
Just wanted to bump this to a) share my small amount of success and b)also continue to be accountable but hopefully we can keep this going. Since June, I am down 2 1/2 stone. Still an immensely long way to get to normal human size but this thread really was the kick starter I needed. Protein works has changed my morning routine and the last 7 weeks, I have ramped it up further by cutting out all alcohol and not a single takeout. (As I right this, I am getting a chubb on for KFC). It's just a nice feeling to feel lighter, not have a full tummy all the time and have a semi-normal bowel. It's been so long, it feels nice just to eat normally again. Struggling with energy drinks/caffeine and my exercise is way down due to my knees, back and covid the last 6 weeks or so but I have just been maintaining a calorie deficit and tracking everything just to keep being accountable. Small targets, celebrate the wins and hopefully my health will start to improve more. Long road but appreciate all the advice. Hopefully this post will keep me right, I don't want to come back to it and have gained it all back by Xmas.
