Kemi or Suella? 09:33 - Jul 5 with 10543 viewsDJR

With the demise of Mordaunt, I think the next leader of the Tory party will be Badenoch or Braverman, especially given the make-up of the membership (assuming the membership is allowed a vote).

Whilst this may help in the fight against Farage, I am not not sure a drift to the right is a winning formula.

On the other hand, if Labour do screw it up, who knows what might happen?

Well thats a matter of opinion about "far right" policies my opinion and I'm sure the majority of the 4.3 million voters for reform wouldn't see it that way including me!

According to some on here, the conservatives are far right🤣

Stop using the term"far right" when discussing Reforms with over 4 million voters I prefer the term not far right but RIGHT. You will be coming out with nonsense that those 4 million-plus are all fascists next as that's what you ultra-lefties always retort!

The number of voters doesn't dictate what side of the political spectrum a party is on.

For what it's worth I don't think the party's policies are far right, yet. But there are clearly some very far right leaning people involved in reform and this vote will potentially give those people more of a voice and make them feel like their views represent a large swathe of people

We're probably in the territory of something akin to 'not all reform voters are racists, but all racists are reform voters'.

There is no doubt that reform can be very dangerous and are a hard right populist party

Also it probably ruins your argument a bit when you get upset about people calling reform far right, then call people 'ultra lefties'

Easy, just follow Starmer. That’s as long as the grubby far left don’t get their hands on him.

They’ll be in denial for years. They much prefer fighting amongst what’s left of their sorry party than governing. Like last time, they’ll search for all the wrong reasons get through two or three leaders before finding something nearly human. If they ever return to power it won’t be for at least 20 years.

They’re finished and can be ignored now.

Out of those two I definitely prefer Kemi, think she is academically the smarter of the two and will have wider appeal. Less sullied by past performance.

But also expect Hunt, Cleverly and Patel to be in the mix potentially.

It's highly unlikely that whoever it is will win the next election or ever become PM anyway - they are in for a 97 to 2007 style period of reflection and multiple leaders.

Kemi sounds good and competent when she is setting the agenda, if she ever has to go off script she is really, really poor for me and always ends up saying something that will cause her problems further down the line - she's not ready.

Suella just isn't very good full stop

Depends on another Cameron to appear from somewhere. However you judge him as PM, he at least knew how to communicate and understood the need for wider electoral appeal.

Yes, but the Tories went through 3 leaders, one of whom wasn't judged fit to fight a General election, after Major's big defeat in 1997, before being able to stomach a moderniser like Cameron. Plenty of Conservatives will point to the 14.3% of the popular vote won by Reform & say that the key to returning to power is regaining those votes, so moving more decisively to the right is probable.

Agree with that. And Kemi hasn't really come under much media scrutiny anyway.

Tory and Labour have become too similar, both moving to the centre. Been many years since we've had a proper Lab/Tory parties.

Hence my comment that whoever takes over is unlikely ever to come within a sniff of PM - will be a few cycles and a few leaders come and go until the next Cameron is found.

Terms like "leftie media" make you sound quite far right to be honest.

Truss wasn't in long enough to bring in any right wing policies. Corby wasn't PM so was irrelevant what his views were, I was talking about whilst in power.

It's not. Tories have been drifting from centre right to rabid right for some time now and I think they are drifting towards total Trupian nuttery. We may see a merge with Teform yet but I think (hope) that results people taking auch more considerd, most change of beating their candidate approach to casting their vote.

It's not a good choice between the 2 is it

Tugendhat is truly awful, and I say that as someone who has seen him at close quarters since his first hustings. Indeed, the last time I saw him was on the Sarah-Jane Mee programme on Sky a couple of weeks ago making a complete fool of himself.

He's a bit like Tim Nice But Dim, and tends to come out with pompous drivel.

Hunt would be the best and most competent option in my view but unlikely to get anywhere with the membership.

He surely can’t be any worse than Raab or Gove who I had the misfortune to be far too near.

Still for all their relevance, the rump of tories may as well elect a tin of beans as leader. Be more useful than the last ones.

I meant awful in the sense of incompetence and ineptitude.

His posh military manner fools many but not me, and he would be completely out of his depth as PM, even though his self-confidence is second to none.

I disagree. A fair few racists voted for Galloway and his party.
