Language apps. 20:45 - Jul 6 with 1082 viewsMattinLondon

I’ve always thought that learning a foreign language was important. Unfortunately I have no talent for languages- having a slight speech impediment doesn’t help especially so when high school teachers used to openly mock my efforts.

Anyway, I’m going to try again and think Spanish is my best bet. Has anyone used a language app to help them? And if so which ones would you recommend? Thanks.

The approach is to follow what is effectively a one to one lesson.

I should add there is a phone app for it to.

As for your teachers, they sound like they were in the wrong profession, supposed to be encouraging learning not discouraging it.

I don't think language apps are that good. I'd recommend Michel Thomas' Spanish audio series. You'll progress more quickly and understand the fundamentals better. I used it before going to Central America.

I got myself a lifetime Babbel subscription, mainly to learn French. I’ve found it pretty good. I work in a largely French setting which also helps.

Lifetime ain’t cheap, but you have access to around twelve different languages.

You need to supplement whatever you do with other things like watching films and speaking with native speakers who can help correct you.

I’ve been using Duolingo and on a 335 day streak (look at me) for Spanish. Admittedly I don’t take it too seriously and do a couple of lessons a day, managed to ask for beers and taxis this week in Palma😂

I'm sh*t with languages( maths brain) lived in Spain for nearly 7 years and still not fluent.
It depends how your brain works, if you like repetition then Duolingo Is OK, and builds your vocab but doesnt help conversation, Babbel has recently vastly improved so seems better.
Once you have some basics watching spanish tv works well especially programmes that you know well in English

DuoLingo.

I've been using it for just under a year to learn Portuguese. I started with the free version, but if you're serious about learning a language, pay the £65 or so for unlimited access.

My vocabulary and pronunciation have improved dramatically in 9-10 months - I usually do about 10 hours a week on it (its quite addictive!), combined with a real-life Brazilian-Portuguese teacher on video call for a couple of hours a week.

I also listen to podcasts, music, watch films with subtitles if possible and read books, it's damn hard work - especially at my age, lol - but gives you such a sense of satisfaction when you realise you can actually understand when someone speaks in their native language.
