Latest squad list from Watson with in-play transfers added 12:09 - Jul 8 with 3262 views | unstableblue | Watson helpfully put out the below - I know there’s been many posted here already - latest squad list. I’ve added in capitals the three players in transfer discussions. And in brackets those expected to leave. A Goalkeeper, Left Back, Centre Mid, Number 10 still needed. Which would be 9 in total incoming if the centre back, left attacking mid and striker slots are also filled, alongside the incoming Johnson and Omari. What squad size does that make considering u21 allowances?! As in does Harness and Edmundson have to leave? Any ideas!?? TOWN SQUAD AS IT STANDS GK: Walton, Slicker (loan expected) RB: Johnson, Clarke CB: Woolfenden, Burgess, Tuanzebe, Edmundson, Baggott (loan expected), Ndaba (to Scottish side), GREAVES LB: Davis CM: Morsy, Luongo, Taylor, Humphreys (loan expected), El Mizouni (transfer, Oxford) RW: Hutchinson, Burns AMC: Chaplin LW: Broadhead, Harness, PHILOGENE ST: Hirst, Al-Hamadi, Ladapo (transfer or contract close), DELAP [Post edited 8 Jul 2024 12:15]

Have update on Ladapo who will definitely leave or have his contract terminated Al-Hamadi - I’m not sure, his groin and I believ another issue we’re significant so we really haven’t seen the best of him yet. Perhaps depends on how his pre-season goes. And whether we land Delap. I think Delap is an investment and a bigger name striker, such as the Greek guy are in the frame. You need guaranteed goals in the Premier League… even Hirst a gamble

Greek guy seems to be going to Bologna, from what I'm told. Nothing new from a Town perspective.
I think this is telling on left centre back… on 12:26 - Jul 8 with 2981 views | unstableblue |

Stuart Watson included this in his recent transfer article, related to Delap’s pace and power but referencing our centre back options at the time. “ Speaking after Town's 3-0 home win against Hull last October, McKenna said Delap was a big reason behind why he selected George Edmundson over Cameron Burgess in defence. "I thought his qualities tonight against Liam Delap would be really important," explained the Blues boss. "There are not many more powerful runners than George so we thought we'd put him up against one of the more powerful runners in the league." We will get very mobile Centre forwards in the Premiership, less lumps which Burgess thrived on. Points to a role for Edmundson, BUT with Greaves incoming, who is left sided, mobile and excellent. Suggest he becomes first choice with Burgess as back up, and hence Edmundson could leave. BUT five centre backs seems the right number, and maybe Baggot is kept on? Certainly see Axel and Wolf vying for the right sided berth. With Luke the starter.

Thanks Phil. Would you agree though that a bigger name/goal record at a higher level is planned? And Delap is an investment as he is rated? Delap comes in then Al-Hamadi out on loan. The lesson from last season is you need three Centre forwards of quality. If we’d not secured Moore, which was tight, not sure we’d have got promotion.

You'd hope so, wouldn't you? Delap looks very much the profile of the sort of player we've looked to sign over the last couple of seasons. I agree that it would be good to see Al Hamadi go out on loan. Was talking to someone in recruitment at another club recently and they reckoned he did enough with us to get a loan to a Championship side. I think we'll need three number nines and one with a bit more experience at the top level seems likely. That was why I thought they might well have been something in Mounié before he joined Aufsburg. An inexpensive third option with experience. I do generally think the squad is badly lacking in Premier League experience as it stands.

His goals : minutes ratio was quite impressive really, admittedly one was from the spot and a couple tap ins came when we were already 11-0 up against Sheffield Wednesday, but still. I thought he was excellent in that start against Boro, really led the line with maturity and held the ball up well, has the pace and power to run in behind. Unsurprisingly ran out of steam but won't have done himself any harm at all with that performance. Certainly feels to me like he'll go out on loan and we'll bring 2 in. It's such a physical and effort intensive role in our system that we'll need a starter and finisher of equal ability that can rotate interchangeably, and certainly a 3rd as well.

I spoke to Al Hamadi. I got the impression his injury was quite serious and was actually two issues. So he was playing in quite some discomfort, as was Clarke, last season. So to put in the work rate, threat, and some goals, would suggest a lower level Championship would take him on loan, which would be ideal for his development. He didn’t have a chance to shine/develop here last term. I share thoughts on Premiership experience, and a little concerned we’re following the Burnley mode of ‘potential’. We have Johnson with Premiership experience, but he wasn’t a starter. And we believe Omari can step up, hence the fee. I do think Greaves is quality - player of season, Championship team of the season. But not Premiership experience. And our senior group, Morsy, Burns, Chaplin, are the same. And Ionnadis would also come with no Premier League experience. For me a central midfielder and striker who’ve had some serious game time in the Premier League is needed. We need to hit the ground running. Although I have great faith in McKenna to set us up to get the most of that will be a very talented bunch - just not Premiership battle hardened. Phil - Philogene would be quite some coup, but he is quite a different character to a typical McKenna signing from what I understand.

Your last line is so key Phil. Very happy with our transfer dealings and linked players so far, however we definitely need experience and a hardered pros with recent Prem experience. Greaves will be great signing l hope but I'm surprised we've not gone for (yet) a 30+ yo CB with prem experience to have in the backline. I think we will need it. Add to that a PL striker or at least someone who has scored goals in a top european league. Think it would be a mistake to gamble on Hirst. Delap and another without sustained top flight experience. Without goals we will do nothing and whilst i'm very optimistic Hirst has the attributes to make the step up it is a risk currently. We need a seasoned pro with Prem experience at the back or up front, preferablly both to add to the superb younger talent we are adding.

Latest squad list from Watson with in-play transfers added on 13:41 - Jul 8 with 2175 views | Reus30 | It's early July, all the best planning in the world, most EPL teams won't know their exact squad as it depends whose available. Loans will be key here. I expect us to get two or three good quality loans (no.9, no.10 and GK). perm backup for Leif so no commitment to game time along with a young GK (our No.1 should not be someone inexperienced!) and then Sheaf in midfield to eventually take over from Morsy. Done and dusted if we get the 3 targets noted along with the above.

Illy… I don’t think they’ll be a dud in this transfer window. Lots of real talent being brought in. Many with potential large upside in value. Going to be interesting to see how Johnson fares. West Ham fans, or it seems a majority, felt he wasn’t quite good enough for Premiership. But under McKenna and in a McKenna system, I’m expecting good things. However, as per the bottom of this thread. There is a risk ‘we do a Burnley’ and don’t bring in enough seasoned Premier League experience. Wolfie and Greaves would be quite green. But as always in McKenna we trust. If we could stay up with a relatively young, but talented team, then it could be the start of something very good.

Yeah. Some of the players linked I have never even heard of, so wouldn't have a clue either way. I am sure that McKenna and his crew are all over it though. Relaxed as a 15 year old Tabby.

We don’t have a great track record of picking up the centre forward we need for the last couple of summer windows now so we have to change that. And right now we look very light on Prem experience as has been mentioned. I’m fairly relaxed but we do need this number 9 in.
