Beer 20:06 - Jul 20 with 13873 viewsgtsb1966

We've had a discussion on here about the good stuff but what about the really bad ones. I bought a case of Shore Leave brewed by BrewDog today. I can't tell you how bad it is. Had to give it away. Waiting for a response from the person I gave it to.

Ah, agree with you on the avoidance of the McMullens beers, The brewery is, as mentioned by Zombies elsewhere, interesting in its architecture, but when I used to live in Enfield and work in Covent Garden, there were far too many of their pubs around for my liking too.

I was going to mention the pleasing brewery building, which I walk past occasionally. I can't give an opinion on the beers as I haven't drunk a McMullens pint since the 1960s!

Yes, it is the former post office building, though of course back in the day it wasn’t painted black.

The journey to London is really quick from there. It’s two stops from Bromley too. Bromley itself isn’t the greatest for pubs. A lot have gone, including The Railway that was next to the station. There is the Wetherspoons at Bromley South which is ok and a fair few in Bromley North along with places to eat.

In younger years me and chums tended stay in the area for convenience and cost. It was only when I got to work in London that I got to know a few of the pubs (mostly expensive and a bit rubbish).

One of the nicest though is called the Cross Keys in Endell St, not least because the tourists miss it. It’s a small traditional London pub serving decent beer at a tolerable price and it’s close to one of the best Indians in the area - The Punjab in Neal St.

They perhaps couldn't properly be called pubs, but my favourite places in central London were the Tattersall Castle, near Charing Cross, and especially the Queen Mary, next to Waterloo Bridge.

There was something nice about floating on the Thames, outside if the weather were good, and inside if it were not.

But the following also deserve an honourable mention: the Old Shades and Clarence in Whitehall, and the George and Cheshire Cheese near to Fleet Street, reflecting the two places I worked in London.

Soooo much hatred for my favourite tipple 😂

My comments related only to the non-alcoholic (0.5%) version of Ghost Ship, not the ‘proper’ version (which I’ve never tried).

Love a neckoil - but went in Tesco the other day, 4 small cans, like £8.50!

Absolutely stick that. I’d rather drink water than have pants pulled down.

Kesgrave social club does a lovely east coast on tap.

Has anyone mentioned lager and lime, which was my first tipple when I had a much sweeter tooth?

I couldn't drink it now.

Tolly Cobbold had a bottled beer called 'Cobnut' which a lot of us started off on due to it being not so bitter.

I know both the Shade and Clarence. They were ok. The Silver Cross wasn’t great and the Lord Moon was a Wetherspoons. The boat ones are fun. The George and Cheshire Cheese are ok - old pubs. In Whitehall, I’ve obviously frequented all of them. Red Lion, St James Tavern, Westminster Arms were touristy, expensive and riddled with journalists so they were mostly avoided.

Mind you, I did have the pleasure of telling the Sky news broadcaster Kay Burley that she was much uglier in real life than on the tele, had a fat ars@ and needed to up the deodorant. She wasn’t entirely happy but then she shouldn’t have been rude to my mate.

The other side towards MioJ/Broadway, you had the Two Chairman (site of the old Cock Pit), Feathers, Old Star, Sanctuary House, Adam and Eve. The Feathers was the cheapest, Two Chairman the most interesting.

The old boys I knew that used to drink it said they mainly had it as you got much more than a pint!

They reckon they should get a full pint and a bottle of light ale, anything under 75% of a full glass all hell breaks out 😂

I like all the beers mentioned above, haha.
Some less good than others, and I rarely drink big-brand ones,
so am not a Carling expert. Less keen on flavoured beers, like chocolate or melon - but if you start with one, they taste reasonable.

I find the flavour of one beer is affected adversely by the previous one,
so if I have a variety, I choose the order (flavour, and then the strength) carefully.

I like Ghost Ship and Bah Humbug.

But Brahma I have found to be undrinkable.
And Gutbier is hard on the gut (not available in the UK, tho', afaik).

My go-to beer is any, but if I can find a Co-op with their own-brand lager (some Spars have it, too), I am always pleased.

Favourites: Ch'Ti French beers, and Theakston's Old Pec.
Or German Beers.
