Breakdancing in Olympics on 22:05 - Jul 23 with 1932 views | Guthrum | More or less than Ice Dance, Rhythmic Gymnastics or Dressage? All well-established Olympic sports, but having a heavy element of performance over physical feats. All you need to do is decide certain elements which must or can be included in a routine (e.g. steps, spins, poses), which can be judged for technique and skill, then you have the basis of a standardised scoring system.

given that de coubertin won an olympic medal in the (not particularly swift, high or strong) sport of literature, i think he'd cope! [Post edited 24 Jul 2024 12:30]

The tug-of-war in the 1908 Olympics was "interesting". Britain fielded 3 teams, all from various Police divisions & after some withdrawals, the only opposition was from USA & Sweden. Liverpool Police won the first pull against USA, after which the Yanks protested about the Scousers wearing their police boots & withdrew. The Scousers saw off the Swedes in the semi final, but lost the final to the City of London police. The Swedes failed to show for the bronze medal match so the Met took the bronze.

Breakdancing in Olympics on 23:07 - Jul 24 with 1295 views | acj | Sort of depends on the cultural framing. In the UK we think of dance more as a form of art (creative expression), than a form of sport (physical exertion), but that’s not a universally held view. Here in Latin America, in many countries dance is very much seen as a sport. Many view its ‘creative’ characteristics no differently than they view a sport like football as an opportunity to display their creative side (which maybe goes some way toward explaining the more ‘flair’ style of footballer associated with some countries on this continent). Folklore dances are taught in PE class here in Chile and there are lots of examples of competitive team dance competitions in cultures all over South America, which are often seen as a test of physical prowess as much as they are a creative endeavour.

Breakdancing in Olympics on 23:15 - Jul 24 with 1280 views | Meadowlark | The simple answer, in my opinion, is that the best competitor wins. Quickest time, longest distance, highest/longest jump etc etc. If people like judges have to come in and make subjective judgements, then it's not a sport, it's something else.

Does that make football a sport or not? I've seen some pretty "subjective" refereeing over the years!
