Mauricio Pochettino. 22:05 - Jul 24 with 4392 views | Mercian | Apparently he is interested in the England manager's job. I would welcome him but there is history. He is Argentinian, something in itself I have no problem with but, and I stress, the footballing history between our nations is bitter. The Hand of God, Beckham's petulance/Simeone's over-reaction and on a more personal level for Poch his soft foul on Michael Owen back in 2002 that resulted in Beckham scoring the penalty and England progressing. Thoughts. [Post edited 24 Jul 2024 22:07]

The only foreign manager I would accept would be Pep just because he doesn't have a strong affiliation with Spain considering that he is Catalan. |
He played almost 50 times for Spain, he's pretty Spanish!

I'm not an expert on Pep, but I get the impression that he doesn't have so much love for Spain that he would manage them. On a certain level players want to maximize their potential to win things and join successful clubs and in the case of players with options, like Declan Rice, join the national team at the highest level they can manage. Pep had a choice of Spain or no international football. As a manager he could manage any country on the international level, or not even bother managing an international side.

Mauricio Pochettino. on 22:12 - Jul 24 by Swansea_Blue | Hand of God was nearly 40 years ago. Falklands longer. Only wives hold grudges that long. You’re right that it could cause issues though. It shouldn’t but I can imagine the tabloid press stirring things up. I’d have thought he’d be ok as the manager. |
"Only wives hold grudges that long". Have you been to Argentina? Has to be English for me.
Mauricio Pochettino. on 14:22 - Jul 25 with 742 views | BlueBlood90 | Why would you want an Argentinian that's proven to be a serial loser? I always think the national team should be represented by a coach of that nationality. Potter or Howe are really the only candidates unless we throw Carsley into the deep end.

Mauricio Pochettino. on 08:25 - Jul 25 by NedPlimpton | I'm not particularly hung up on it, but for me the manager of any national side should be 'from' that country, be it by being born or through having lived their long enough to be a citizen etc I've always felt that national sides should not only feature the best players from that country but also the best coaching staff as well. |
I agree 100%. What is the point of international football if it's not the best of one nation (players, manager, staff etc.) vs the best of another? We already have club football where teams can buy talent from other countries. For any country to have a non native manager, support staff and, of course, players makes a mockery of the whole thing. Just my point of view, I know a many will disagree . | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Mauricio Pochettino. on 16:38 - Jul 25 with 652 views | SuperKieranMcKenna | I’d like to see someone young, progressive, tactically astute, with a record of playing on the front foot. But it’s the FA so it will be Lee Carsley.
Mauricio Pochettino. on 18:58 - Jul 25 with 604 views | MK1 | Sorry, but I want an English Manager. Not because I have a hatred for Argies or Germans, but I have a problem if we meet Argentina or Germany in a World Cup. It's what was thrown at Sven and Capello and I have to agree a bit. I think no matter what country I lived in, I would want one of my own to be the National manager. I know this won't be popular, but I ain't going to lie.

I'm going to put this out there and wait for the backlash. Frank Lampard. He doesn't need to buy anyone, won't have an owner buying players he didn't really want. Doesn't have to play players the owner brought for a fortune. Perhaps, just perhaps Frank is meant to be a National manager and not a club boss. I always thought Harry would have made a brilliant England manager and I have a feeling Frank will be much better at National level. I know it won't be popular and people will laugh, but if I had to pick anyone out there at the moment, then it would be Frank Lampard.

Lampard's just as inexperienced as Southgate was when he got the job, so we have no idea how he'll do! I'd prefer him to Carsley...

What evidence do you have that he'd be a good manager for England? Having a famous footballing name isn't enough, otherwise you might as well just give it to Gazza. Now that would be fun!
