Update on senior squad from a few weeks back.... by joey_itfc15 Jul 2024 16:01 I would agree, definitely think we need at least 1 CM to come in as a starter possibly 2 because I can see Morsy picking up a few suspensions along the way.
Mentioned him here last month.
As a free it looked a real deal, fits the profile of our recruitment and feels like he needs a new/settled home.
I remember him breaking in at Brighton a couple of seasons ago and he looked a real player.

As one of two CMs would make a lot of sense. Allows us the more cash to spend on attacking players
What kind of CM is he? Mass? Morsy? More attacking?
He's primary an 8 who can play as a 6. He did well for Standard Liege last season. He's a decent player who would be a no brainer on a free. More of a goal threat than Morsy but not as strong or commanding in the deeper role. Like Sam he is British born who plays for another nation.
Presumably both parties are quite keen, or he wouldn't be here on trial.
It would be good to get this done early next week.
More I've left looked into him and seen the more this looks like a brilliant bit of business on a free. A bit like Ben Johnson. At 25 and with the ability he has it looks really good. The fact he hasn't got a club immediately and we offer chance to stay in the Prem means wages shouldn't be crazy though he will want Prem wages.
As much as I like him when he is on his game Alzate on his pedigree and experience (though younger) would be ahead of Taylor you would think. Bring different things to the table.

If he was under contract and we had to pay a reasonable fee..... would we go for him? Seems a no-brainer as we can get him on a free, but he could take up a valuable squad place. I hope we only go in for him if he's a good fit and not a cheap squad filler. We need a serious CM who can go in straight away to play alongside Morsy as Luongo and Taylor (IMO) probably aren't going to be PL class week in, week out.

Think we're probably looking at bringing in two CMs so if he does come it doesn't necessarily mean he's viewed as a starter for this season. With Delap/Hutchinson not counting to the squad cap we have fewer concerns there than we might do.

Fair enough. Don't know enough about him, but he's got more PL experience than pretty much all our squad. Having said that.... how much does 20 games a season in the top Belgium league for the last 2 seasons mean? Feels like he's been on his way down for the past 2 seasons looking at that. Maybe I'm misjudging the quality of Belgium football, but I'm thinking if he was that good he would have got a decent championship loan in the last 2 seasons. Just reading between the lines.

Can't answer that question of course but you could ask the same question about Johnson? It would depend on the fee of course. We've had an opportunity to look at Alzate. Let's not forget he was in favour and playing regular Prem football under Potter. Fans rate him. There is not a lot of downside IF he has done well in his trial with us. He's a multi million pound player. A Colombian International. And he's free. If we got him and say Hamer I'm feeling pretty good about the midfield depth suddenly.
He's a very neat and tidy player. Probably somewhere between a prem version of Bru/Skuse so he isn't going to come and rip it up for us. But he can recycle the ball and link the play and break things up and his ability on the ball is premier league level. Not sure on his engine and physicality.
