Because release clauses have to be paid all up front. No room to negotiate in instalments. So no way we’d drop £18m from this seasons budget. Suspect we may have to pay more, but get favourable terms spread over a period of time. |

The Hamer bit he’d heard nothing on so was me putting two and two together and assuming that the news reports had got the wrong Sheff U player.

Happened recently with United and Zirkzee. Had release clause of €40m, but paid €42m in the end so they could pay €14m for 3 years.
Only found that out last summer when Liverpool paid €70m upfront for Dominik Szoboszlai, as he had interest from other clubs and they didn’t want him to go elsewhere. Nothing Leipzig could do when they triggered that as well. |  |

Phil will confirm I’ve a very strong source at/near the club.
I just sometimes have reason not to post stuff as it could cause issues within the club. Such as the McKenna to Palace situation in February last year. I smartly kept that quiet bar a few places and Phil later confirmed it was true but that I didn’t want it in public remain. I also told of the Delap story a few days before that was out. This only applies in 'cash' terms. Even if the club paid up front, for accounting purposes they could still amortise the payment over the life of the player's contract and thus it would be still be spread over several years in terms of PSR accounting.
Really depends how much cash on hand the club have around, rather than making any difference to PSR headroom. |  |
