Entomologists - what have I just seen? 17:00 - Aug 14 with 2773 views | NthQldITFC | Looked like a small hornet with a fairly bulbous abdomen with two broadish, yellow stripes. Also what looked like a longitudinal yellow stripe between the eyes, i.e 'nose' to thorax. Rushed inside to see if it was the dreaded Asian hornet (coming over here stinging our knobs etc.) but can't find anything that matches. Don't think it buzzed. Is it one of those nice lookie-likey jobs that turn out to actually be a moth or a giraffe or something odd like that? Any ideas?

Harmless, unless they catch you up the pipe with one of those massive tusks when you're bending over weeding your parsnips!

Entomologists - what have I just seen? on 17:24 - Aug 14 with 2603 views | BlueBoots | I see you've already identified...was going to recommend you consult the board's leading authority, StochesStotasBlewe's left nut. Would like to know what got me on the finger a couple of Sundays back; didn't see the fella and thought it was a nettle sting at the time - couple of hours later noticed a red circle on the finger with 2 small holes that were weeping, and the following morning finger had swollen to almost double in size and couldn't bend it. Guessing some kind of spider, and far worse than anything I've had off a bee or wasp - little summer sods

Might have been a false widow. Nasty little critters. Been known to hospitalise people.

It's certainly larger than the hoverflies I've come across at 15-20mm but looks much the same. I can't say I've seen one for years, but they did appear in my parents' conservatory in Felixstowe. EDIT: according to this there are 280 species of hoverfly in the UK. https://www.rhs.org.uk/biodiversity/hoverflies [Post edited 14 Aug 2024 17:46]

You need to watch those seemingly trivial bites. I was hospitalised on a drip with cellulitis after a spider bite, not a venomous one (at least I don't think so.)

It wasn't, but it is now. I said to the paramedic, "Could you take away the pain, but leave the swelling?"

Entomologists - what have I just seen? on 18:25 - Aug 14 with 2269 views | Ryorry | 11th Aug 2020, warm like atm so back door left open, I had this buzzing louder than a bumblebee around a ceiling light at dusk - eventually captured it. This pic was closest I could find, though never did formally ID it. Very large, equivalent to two middle fingernails. 'American Large Milkweed Bug' - but don't think they migrate to UK(?). https://uk.inaturalist.org/taxa/55556-Oncopeltus-fasciatus

You can take a photo whilst in the app, and it searches the object you are interested in. It has saved me many a fruitless, frustrated Google search.
