Makes a lot of sense on loan IMO. We really need to use the 2 domestic loans to sign players that would otherwise be out of reach on perm deals, that's really the way to do it. Phillips would meet that definition, and although his wages would no doubt be high its fairly low risk if he's back off the books next summer. Goes without saying that CM is an area we're desperately light, so one I'm happy with all round.

He didn't impress for West Ham last season and looked rusty at best, so there's going to be an element of being patient with him I think and letting McKenna and co work their magic. We'll have time though, he would be unlikely to feature too heavily vs. Pool and wont be eligible for City, so if we can get him in now he'll have a decent amount of time to get up to speed.

Certainly still a very good Premier league player in there still.

What does this mean for our starting line up?

Surely Cajuste and Phillips would be expecting to play week in week out

Phillips will be eased in. Too soon for a start against Liverpool. Ineligible for the Man City game. A few bench appearances. Then he’ll be ready to start.

Morsy can’t and won’t play every single game.

This is a ridiculous signing. If someone had said to me 2 years ago that in 2 years we'd be on the verge of signing Phillips I 100% would've laughed in their face!

your hyperbole on anything Ipswich related is outstanding.

Shall I post that Phillips is a useless, has been, past it, washed up, mercenary?

Phillips won the England player of the year. It's not an opinion or hyperbole or bigging him up. He was voted for that award and won it. He was England's best player in that tournament and that year.

Since then he's had a move to City that didn't see him get much game time and an ill fated loan.

Do you see Morsy, Luongo or Taylor as the same level of ability that would have them as the best player in a top international side that reached a major final?

It's a massive statement of intent and signing. That's what's outstanding.

Phillips might go on to be useless, a disaster of a loan spell. Bullard, Chopra, JET, we've all had exciting signings that have gone nowhere. But at this point it looks, on paper, bloody exciting and amazing business.

Never bet against FrimleyBlue lads.

the real ITK.

I always thought of him as a clown, perhaps he's actually an alias of Mark Ashton and ahead of the curve.

Perhaps if England had played Kevin Davies as a holding midfield player England would have won a World cup and Euro's by now also.

If KM can get him back to the Phillips who played at Leeds then we'll have one hell of a player.

no not at all.

He's been a good premier league player, he's not played regularly for the last 2 years, i don't see it as an 'amazing' signing. He could be, but his career has been on a downward trend now and that is a concern. People get too attached to names rather than the eye test, he was dreadful at West Ham last season.

Think he has a real opportunity here to turn the narrative around his career being on a downward trend and get his career back on track and i sincerely hope he does!

It's an incredibly risky signing with the loan fee and wages involved and it's alright to feel that way.

The smarmy comment was a measure act of selflessness, taking one for the team and being a sacrificial lamb in an attempt to cultivate a supportive fanbase, fiercely defensive of their new gaffer.

I think the nature of our position means that we are generally in the market for people on the way up (Omari, Greaves, Delap) or those on the way down (Phillips).

I think it is a sign of our intent on both sides that we are able to attract some of the best on both sides (i.e. Omari has a huge ceiling and Kalvin Phillips was a £50m player and England mainstay just a couple of years ago).

A fit and firing Phillips transforms our midfield - you're right that we haven't seen that version of him for a little while, but if we had he wouldn't have made it to us. You'd have to back a whole season under our regime to get him to close to that player, given the improvement in form and fitness we've seen from previous signings.

But if it's only a season long loan, what happens when he leaves? We won't "have a tailor-made replacement for a Kalvin Phillips" (TM Gareth Southgate). We'll have to try an experiment with someone like Alexander-Arnold in midfield! :)

It was very funny when Southgate said that because England had an embarrassment of riches, but what a signing it would be for Ipswich. Man City surely think that KM is the best chance of getting KP back to his best, and it would be a brave person who disagreed!

Keep the faith.

he single handidly created a siege mentality at the club.

Forget McKenna, this is all down to Frimley.

fingers crossed, hope he does amazing.

and a stand named after him, perhaps the new training ground renamed in his honour.

Only stipulation is we wouldn't want Burns to take off the sheet for the statue or cut the ribbon at the training ground re opening.

Thinking about it more, i think he is Ashton, he's talking about the overseas scouting in league 1, he has the vision needed to drive the club forward.
