A Day That Will Live In infamy... 06:47 - Sep 5 with 2669 views | Tangledupin_Blue | Just two years ago today, though sometimes it feels that it was a different lifetime, Britain's "Me, Me, Me" adherents made a choice. From a population of about 66 million they chose Lizard Truss to be Conservative Party leader and, ergo, PM. They managed the virtually impossible feat of finding a 'leader' who was not an upgrade on her predecessor, Poison Boris. I say 'sometimes' it feels like a different lifetime but the financial repercussions seem fresh enough and now they are thrashing about in the same cesspool in search of their next grotesque figurehead.

It was little different to knowing that sitting on a bonfire was a dumb idea and doing it anyway. It will be amusing to see who the next idiot is, but only that given the party for privilege are out of office for a generation so are utterly irrelevant. Edit: Despite the obvious harm she and her chums did, the thick hag still thinks she was right. Bonkers [Post edited 5 Sep 7:31]

But did they know she was, if not useless and stupid, misguided and easily led astray by extremist theories and rhetoric ? She was foisted upon us by a small percentage of the populace who were, for the most part, just as susceptible to radical ideologies as she was. I think there is a lesson to be learnt about a political system that allows that and how it needs to be adapted so that a representative of an extreme minority cannot end up having a significant influence on the lives of the majority, even if it is for just a fortnight (or the best part of a lettuce's lifetime.) This could also be appropriate if there are circumstances in the future that see Keir Starmer toppled by an internal party dispute and, say, Jeremy Corbyn installed in his place.

Yes. She’d held a number of government posts and was known to be useless and impossible to work with in every single one. A colleague of mine worked directly for her at MoJ and I don’t think she’ll be on his Christmas card list. Only Chris Grayling (DoT) topped her on the idiot scale. How and why the tories’ cabal elected her mystifies me. I’ve always felt that if a leader changes a GE should be held. I know it’s the party that’s elected in theory and that’s what successive governments have held on to for decades - but it should be changed in my view.

I wouldn't bet the house on your second paragraph. People were saying similar things about Labour immediately after their crushing defeat in 2019. And this time around, although Labour's victory was huge, it was on a low turnout and plenty of those who voted Labour did so without enthusiasm.

Starmer’s Labour got fewer votes than Corbyn’s Labour did it not? The difference between electoral wipe out and a landslide majority is wafer thin. Mind you I cant see Kemi Badenough swooping in on Downing St with a smaller vote than Sunak managed.

By not inflation-proofing tax thresholds, that is exactly what they did. Leaving us now in the ridiculous position that many people on the basic state pension are likely to tart giving some of it back in income tax. Reducing NI was another hit, as pensioners don't pay it. Instead, they could have changed tax thresholds...

One of the Conservative policies was to give pensioners their own raised threshold to deal with that. Labours attitude to pensioners is despicable.

"How and why the tories’ cabal elected her mystifies me." My theory is that a load of blurry eyed 70 and 80 something year old men found that she reminded them a bit of Thatcher, their loins twitched for the first time in decades, and they voted with their dicks. Horrifyingly that is the most plausible explanation that I can conjure up.

The Conservatives foolishly followed Labour in "boosting internal party democracy" by allowing members to choose their leader, which first produced the unelectable Ian "Duncan" Smith. While this system has also produced unelectable leaders like Corbyn & Truss, members are only effectively shooting themselves in the foot by supporting such candidates.
