Covid jab 09:28 - Sep 13 with 2557 viewsDJR

I am approaching 65 and booked my usual flu jab a couple of weeks ago.

I subsequently got a message saying I could have a Covid jab at the same time which is good news.

And this from a recent BBC article indicates that they have widened eligibility this winter. Perhaps its due to poor uptake in older groups, or perhaps they know something we don't.

"Who can get an NHS Covid booster jab this autumn?

The following groups will be able to have an NHS Covid booster between 3 October and 20 December:

over-64s

people aged between six months and 64 years with health conditions that make them more vulnerable

people living in care homes for older people

front-line health and social-care staff, including in care homes for older people"

Appears to be a significant increase in Covid cases at the moment as well.

And me, apparently, although I fall into none of those categories.

I've always been jabbed much earlier in the sequence than my agegroup (about the same time as my then 81-year-old mother, for the first lot). Last time they held a big enquiry and still couldn't work out why I was eligible. And I'm already booked in for one in October.

Not going to turn it down if offered, despite the 24 hours of unpleasantness afterwarrds.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I've never had any issues with it, and even took the private jab at Boots that was on offer earlier in the year.

Luckily, I won't now have to pay for it.

Nothing sinister, more jabs, less infections, lower opportunity for virus to evolve and change, as generally they change with transfer from host to host. At least that’s my understanding.

I've always had a reaction, like a mild dose of Covid, the night after. But worth it to be protected.

As someone who works in the NHS the focus at the moment is very much on Mpox. Covid doesn't really get mentioned

I've generally felt a bit crappy a few hours later, but it's gone by the morning. Is I always endeavour to have mine done when there's a day off next day.

And get my flu jab at the same time.

That’s probably one reason it’s spreading. As someone who’ll probably need to go into hospital for an op within the next year, Covid worries me more than the (spinal) surgery. No one seems to be masking these days, and have any ventilation systems been put in place on the wards?

Worryingly enough, those symptomatic ones that I'm seeing at the moment are very 'old skool' - high oxygen requirements, 'happy hypoxia' high clot incidence...

Happy (or silent) hypoxia led to my mother's death.

This meant she had no symptoms, and I didn't think to do a finger oxygen test, but one morning she couldn't get out of bed and her oxygen levels were around 85%. She went to hospital and was put on the Covid ward, meaning I had to put on full combat gear to see her. She died within 48 hours because her oxygen levels were just too low.

Her last words to me late at night, when I left because I was not allowed to stay long and it was uncomfortable anyway in that gear, were "Be careful on that road", the A21, indicating she had all her mental faculties. She passed way in the early hours

This was in March 2022.
