After Brighton game, the preferred starting XI is becoming clearer 06:50 - Sep 15 with 3689 viewsLen_Brennan

Kieran MxKenna will continue to use his squad to their best of their abilities, game to game, like he did when bringing Edmundson in a couple of times last season, but all things being even, his favoured starting XI this side of January (for Southampton) will likely be:
Muric
Tuanzebe, O'Shea, Greaves, Davis
Morsy, Phillips
Burns, Hutchinson, Clarke
Delap.

At this point the only possible changes are perhaps starting a fit Hirst & having a fresh Delap come on; starting Szmodics in some games ahead of Clarke if we go more defensive with 2 #10s behind the CF, or starting Cajuste in a couple of weeks when Morsy gets suspended for reaching 5 bookings, and probably again in December when he hits 10!!

Yes i thought Hirst did well and offered us something different, would agree delap coming on at 60 mins would be fun to watch

Poll: If we sing for 90 mins for all remaining games, how many points is it worth?

It's tricky because Szmodics is a real goal threat and has that bit of aggression you sometimes need away from home so I like to see him starting.

It'll also be interesting if we're chasing a game on the hour if he'd go Delap and Hirst up top for a spell. Proper handful for any defence.

Some people won’t like it but I wouldn’t be all that surprised to see Morsy and Burns to not be regular starters post the next Int break

You were right, someone didn't like it.

We still haven't seen Delap and Jack Clarke on the field at the same time have we?

Would like to see that ...

Pretty telling that as soon as Burns is back fit (and probably not 100% match fit) he started. And Morsy is the first name on the teamsheet. He's been excellent so far.

I’m not reading too much into Burns starting to be honest, those wide positions will rotate every game depending on the opposite number, the game plan, individual fitness and who will finish the game strongest. Yesterday we kept ourselves in the game and sought to make attacking changes that could hurt Brighton in the later stages

Morsy of course I expect to start every game he’s available, unless Cajuste wins the shirt off him during a suspension.

Im still wondering if we might see H Clarke in the Burns role.

I can't see him being binned off, I also can't see him getting in over Johnson and Tuanzebe.

a niche perspective

Think that's probably not far off it with maybe a few home and away tweaks and a bit of rotation over the next month or two as some players bed in. E.g For now Szmodics workrate and defensive support is probably better than Clarke's so we may well see him preferred as a starter for the tougher away games until Clarke develops this.

Also a couple of those positions there's probably much closer competition e.g Burns/Ogbene and Delap/Hirst.

Harry Clarke is never going to play the Burns role, never, not once.

Maybe not, but when he joined he did say he had been playing the Burns role, so personally I wouldn't write it off happening just yet.

Ogbenne had just played 2 internationals, Burns was fresh, and hadn’t been out that long. We needed Burns defensive qualities to start as a support to Tuanzebe. Another game a different set of challenges and Ognenne starts

That’s a wild shout. He won’t play much football for us this season unless there’s injuries, and if he does it won’t be on the right wing.

You only have to listen to KM's post match to tell you how much he loves Burns and what he brings. No doubt there will some rotation between him and Ogbene starts wise, but he is going to play a huge part this season.

So that means that each week we are likely to see no more than five (probably fewer than five) players on the pitch from the squad that finished last season.
I recall at the time wondering how many of last years squad would be fearful at the prospect of winning promotion since it would likely mean a change of club. Fortunately it didn’t appear to affect their performances.

I seen Clarke as being a finisher. McKenna likes a grafter like Szmodics starting games and then bringing in a pacey winger to run at tired defences midway through the second half as he did with Sarmiento last season.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over
