Having to play extra time, then play us Saturday.
C'est la vie.

No extra time - straight to penalties. As we should remember from the last round.

Poll: Who would you play at right centre back on Saturday?

If their back line play is anything similar to their usual league style this season. Our high press could have a field day. Get morsy higher to cover downes being an option for the outball. Phillips sits deeper. Job done 3 goals to be scored. 2 for delap. 1 for hutchinson.

What difference does that make when it’s their second team who played tonight?

I just don’t get why a few (admittedly a minority) were w@nking over Southampton’s football last season, particularly when we beat them at Portman Rd. They were just knocking is around at the back. Whilst we played out from the back we did it with purpose, always looking to create chances.

Passing repeatedly back to your keeper to maintain 75pc possession is pointless if you can’t score, and can’t defend. The most overrated, powderpuff team, and completely style over substance. Russell Martin is a fraud, his football is totally ineffective, and they only scraped up through the playoffs by having one of the best squads in the league.

We hung in during that match though. It wouldn't have flattered them to be 3-1 or 4-1 up before Broady scored.

We played them better at their place where we limited them very well despite them dominating possession. Both games were very tight and could have gone either way.

They were superb first half.

Made our win even more impressive, because we really had to wrestle that game back.

The thing I remember most about that game was first half when KWP found himself in acres of space on the right around halfway, and their crowd was urging him forward as they had a chance to attack us, and Martin rushed out into his technical area and gestured frantically to slow it down. KWP then put his foot on the ball, turned back and they started playing tippy tappy along the back line again.

They're obviously a quality team on their day and they were very good at our place, but there does seem to be valid questions about their style. You'd never see the above scenario involving McKenna.

Clearly can’t remember it very well as KWP didn’t play at Portman Road.

Ah apologies just seen I misread your post and you were referencing the away match at their place.

The one thing i thought they did really well (in a few games, not just against us) was get stuart armstrong free in that left channel. Good player i thought.

And then they released him in the summer.

They really weren't just doing that in the home game. You'd struggle to find another last season in which we faced as many shots, as many penetrations into the box, as many big chances created against us, as well the possession dominance, let alone all of it together. They were irresistible for the best part of an hour and then it became an even contest. Best away team I saw at Portman Road by a distance, though unlike Leeds they weren't clinical.

I agree, they were a strong side last season which made our double over them even more impressive. I thought they were very dangerous and for the 1st half at least looked the better side, and for periods of the 2nd to be fair to them.

If you're looking for proper possession without purpose you want to look at us under Lambert.

It's Lambert Walk football, only with a slightly more competent budgie fraud in charge.

Yeah Southampton's undoing last season (to my eyes at least) was a combination of Bazunu, Russell's inflexibility in playing out from the back, less clinical finishing, and being in competition with the top two juggernauts at the top. It wasn't a lack of creativity or attacking intent; they'd scored as many goals as us with three games to go and at that time were 1st for shots and shots on target. They beat Leeds three times and went unbeaten for twenty-something games in the middle of the season.

I get the temptation to pretend they were rubbish but it lessens our own achievement to do so really, as you allude to. Personally, having watched our rivals a fair bit last year as well as the league generally, Southampton games were the next best watch behind ours. Leicester were much more boring.
