Now, I’m fully aware some people aren’t going to like this in the circumstances, and I’m also clearly going to forgive him given the limbs at the end. BUT…

Thought Morsy was actually quite far off the pace yesterday. Southampton drove through our midfield so easily. Quite a few times in the first half where he didn’t appear to be guarding that right side of midfield. Went from fouling anything that moves to not really making a challenge!

Maybe I missed something more tactical that explains it, but thought without KP he looked off the pace. Thoughts? Clearly I still love him FWIW

Imo he hasn't had the same effect in the last two games as prior fixtures. But of those available I'd rather have morsy in the middle than a taylor or luongo.

Teams target him, simple.
They know he’s our driving force.
Downes got the better of him a few times yesterday…

He didn't have the best game. Certainly made up for it with the goal.

I don't think Cajuste looked much better for what it's worth. Probably worth mentioning that Morsy and Luongo had such a good balance and understanding that replicating it either the new partners will probably take some time.

I must have watched a different game.

Downes did nothing of note apart from a spell at the start of the second half.

Morsy was definitely receiving the ball on the half turn more than what we had done previously.

I thought he looked great yesterday. I don't think he will ever get the time and space he got last year but he still made a decent impact on the game.

Yes, he would have been my man of the match yesterday, even without the goal.

But I think Downes also had an increasing influence on the game after the opening spell. I particularly like the way he carries the ball forward by moving into space, something that he didn't really do at Ipswich where he was much more defensive. Indeed, it was him who set up the chance in the second half where Archer probably should have scored.

I only watched the second half but in my eyes Downes was by far the best player on the pitch.

Soton pressed us really well except the last 10 minutes. That was their undoing.

We didn't have much time on the ball and often played with our backs to goal which we were frankly pretty average at.

A lot of our players most notably Burns, struggled to get a foothold in the game as it was uncomfortable and pretty cramped as the game didn't remain open after the fast start.

Morsy and Hutchinson battled well and tried to get us in the game. Morsy ultimately saving our bacon.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Its fair to say that he did struggle at times during the game but at other times did some good things, It's going to be very much like that for him this season as the quality is so much higher that he is never going to dominate like he did for much of last season. The one thing you know with Sam though is that he will keep going right to the end.

As for Downes I thought he was very good for the most part and probably the pick of the midfielders on the pitch. Good on the ball and I lost count of the number of times he was annoyingly there to break up our attacks just when they looked promising.

I thought any issue in midfield yesterday was because Cajuste was pretty anonymous as opposed to Morsy having a poor game, to be honest

If Downes wasn't a ex Ipswich player he would not get a mention average no more.

He was up against a far better player with something to prove. Flynn Downes.

Still quite effective for a jobbing lower league fouler playing at the highest level of his career.

"Southampton drove through our midfield so easily."

We were effectively playing 2 vs 3 in CM yesterday, with Cajuste also playing further forward than Phillips has been when he plays with Morsy, so a lot more work for Morsy to get through. Our high press was causing Southampton a lot of problems (Cajuste backing up the 10's), but when Southampton did beat the press, it did make us more open than we have been in recent games; Southampton actually mixed it up a bit with a few direct balls too that just bypassed trying to play through us, and we made hard work of dealing with a few of those. Think they may be gameplans we see often this season - bit more protection for the back 4 and sit / counter against the better teams, and aggressive high press (as we've been used to in previous seasons) against teams where we feel we can get at them for a win.

He was good yesterday, IMHO. I'm fully aware that he is average at best by Prem standards.

I thought as we drove on last 20 minutes it was Morsy orchestrating,
