Asking for a friend... 16:35 - Oct 4 with 1695 views | blue_curacao | A question for all the tech savvy people out there. I'm planning a short break in France but intend to work remotely for a couple of days while I'm there. If I'm logging in to my corporate network using a work laptop, will my employer be able to tell that I am abroad somewhere?
Asking for a friend... on 16:44 - Oct 4 with 1632 views | factual_blue | Unless you're taking a sickie to visit France, does it matter? Why not just ask if it's ok, and if it isn't, don't do it. My advice would if you're working in your own time, don't. #worklifebalance

Asking for a friend... on 16:46 - Oct 4 with 1620 views | Plums | Quite possibly - but depends on what you're logging into and how. It could alert security monitoring if a log in from France isn't expected behaviour. I personally don't care where people work from - as long as they're not there so long they cause visa/ tax issues. Is there a reason not to tell the employer?

Asking for a friend... on 16:49 - Oct 4 with 1616 views | wkj | I don't know how it is set up, but the general answer is they probably will. A lot of BYOD companies that run a server for remote connections can get geolocation data from laptops, regardless of whether or not you use a VPN or not. The big question would be, would thye be bothered to look it up.

Thanks all for the replies. To give more context, I think there was an incident in the summer when someone lost a company laptop while working remotely abroad without permission. As a result they are cracking down on it. I don't want to ask as I expect the answer to be no so am weighing up the likelihood of them finding out. Think I'll probably just book an extra couple of days leave and not work while I'm there - seems like the safest option

Do they allow you to connect to the network on your own device by chance?

No, only via a work issued laptop

Hmmm, I would be very surprised if they aren't monitoring geolocation then, hate to be a buzzkill.

Would a VPN not help or would they detect that?

If they're cracking down on it then chances are they'll have put in place tools to detect if you're logging in from abroad. Either get proper permission or take annual leave and leave the laptop at home!

Think there’s some rules around how many days you work abroad. I doubt that the op will be affected by that.

VPN wont make any difference if the laptop is GPS enabled and the server software pings it.

He will be fine in that regard. It’s grey, but a few days are not pushing the boundaries. I think our lot allow up to 6 weeks per year. Most important bit is what is being worked on. Accessing stuff means data transfer outside of the UK, which may be in breach of client contracts etc.
