National Treasure 5-a-side team on 15:53 - Oct 8 by Help | This reminds me of a game I used to play with fellow workers. Each month we had to name someone we thought may pass away in the next month. Bit morbid, no bets or money. Just a name No one already known to be unwell was allowed. Not wishing such a thing on anyone, just picking random people. Obviously very rarely got it right but sometimes a left fielder came up. Played it for years. |
My chums and I played something similar for years. We called it The Dead Pool after the Dirty Harry film. One evening we agreed to pay £5 in each month to a fund (Direct Debit). We debated and agreed a list of famous names from any source names then allocated five each. The first to go would scoop the pot for whoever had them - sometimes a fair bit of money. When somebody died, we’d meet and between us elect a replacement over a beer or two, paid for by the last winner. The name had to be agreeable to the winner and to the other participants so if you’d not won, you’d try and stitch the person up with somebody as fit as a butchers dog and if you won you’d want somebody near the end. We had a written set of rules including nobody known to us (one person had worked for Thatcher on an election believe it or not), date of announcement in the case of the Chinese leader, no relations, no unknown people, no bumping the candidates off and one or two other rules Bit morbid/sick, but hey ho. It ran for a good few years and was the cause of many a fun evening. | |
