Before a ball was kicked 4th bottom was almost universally accepted….. 17:19 - Oct 19 with 5529 viewscharlie1

…. as representing a fantastic season.

8 games in and a combination of results that see us in exactly that position is being met with such an outpouring of over-the-top negativity it’s ridiculous.

Seems coming 4th bottom whilst also winning every game was the actual expectation.

I've only skimmed the popular threads so fair enough if there has been ridiculous negativity somewhere. My own experience is of reading normal reactions to where we find ourselves. We've been somewhat close to winning one or two games out of eight and have led for a combined total of around 20 minutes. 19 points may be enough for 4th bottom at the end of the season but it's unlikely. The more normal reflection in my view would be that we're below the required trajectory for survival, as are the three below us. Last season's 26 points is the lowest ever total for 3rd bottom I think(?); from memory that's the first ever time 3rd bottom has failed to reach at least 30 points.

Points and performances feel more relevant at this stage and my own view is that 4 points is about fair for the performances we've put in. My overarching explanation for why we've struggled doesn't involve criticism of the club or its staff; what we're trying to achieve is just incredibly hard. I like to keep cheery so am hopeful we may find the significant improvement we need in time, but I respect that not everyone will choose that road when confronted with the start we've had and the present evidence. If expressing concern online turns to killing the atmosphere in stadiums, that would be very bad for our prospects though.

Many of the new plastic supporters cannot remember how dire a relegation campaign is

Plus you have to remember the manager doesn’t want to be here and has assembled a job lot of mismatched strangers.

You've got to love the Effalump.

It is almost as if he wants down votes.

Perhaps he does ? If that is so then I for one am going to stop pleasing him.

I am going to give him uppies for the reason that I think he does not want them and at least he is entertaining.

I say he ....... ? "They might identify as non binary, a sheep, or even a BUDGIE !

It’s not the results it’s the performances in the last two games isn’t it?

Yes it is they are playing like total strangers when it comes to defending.

What ever happened to ‘when in doubt hoof the (swear word) out’ !

They haven’t got time to muck about with the ball in the area in this league.

I think it's fair to say we wouldn't be in the premier league if we didn't 'muck about' with the ball in defence, it's how we play and a large part of how we achieved back to back promotions. The errors are a problem obviously, but it's not as simple as saying just hoof it out, if we do that we give away possession and just have to weather another attack. I think as much of it is adapting their mindset to being in the premier league, and knowing that errors are going to be punished so much more often, which I think is probably a big part of the cause of the errors, that moments doubt in decision making.

We'll finish 1st bottom if we play like that and West Ham every week. I think that's the concern.

This. We were doing quite well prior to those two games. It feels like we're going backwards.

Surely you have to balance your view with the ludicrous level of overexpectation that was so comically evident on here? Some were forecasting Europe - many thought top half. Very few thought a grim relegation struggle was going to pan out

Given all that a rather pathetic zero wins from eight attempts is rather chastening - particularly when recently we’ve seen a bunch of strangers reduced to chasing shadows against Southampton, West Ham and Everton….. hardly the crème de la crème.

On the one hand coming 4th from bottom with zero wins might be construed as a tad disappointing. On the other beat Leicester or Brentford and it’s Europe here we come. Early day to give up entirely methinks.

I just wish our defence was trying as hard as you this season,

Back the Pinkun, Elephant. You've given it your all but it's just not getting the reaction you were hoping for.

I'll be honest, I think I'll miss you when you head back to Norfolk x

You can’t compare Championship football to Premier league football.

Sometimes you just have to put your foot through the ball and regroup.

Everything is so much quicker and I guess they have no time to adapt to it.
