"In terms of ..." 16:24 - Oct 25 with 1463 views | Len_Brennan | This expression is suddenly everywhere in the media, I can't help zoning in on it every time it is lazily trotted out & it is grinding my gears. I find it particularly annoying when a reporter starts a question with it when interviewing a manager, footballer, or even in a mainstream news interview on ... pollution or anti-social behaviour. But equally so when journalists/podcasters are just giving their match report or general assessment - there is one particular Town podcaster who regularly throws it out 2, or even 3, times in the same sentence! Maybe it's just me noticing it, but I fear it's getting to epidemic levels & must be reigned in. Tune in next week, when I'll be sinking my teeth into the rise of the penetrating journalistic technique of stating a scoreline, following by "your thoughts", as a lead question following a game. The Jermaine Jenas favourite, ‘I’m not being funny but..’ People (politicians) who start their answer with, ‘Listen’ or ‘Look’ which is far more irritating than the standard Australian cricketer (or Ange Postecoglu) response…‘Aah look mate’ Harry Kane’s starter to absolutely any question ‘Yeah, no, I mean..’ Overuse of ‘unprecedented’ which is now used for any event slightly out of the ordinary. There we go, I feel better already. An irritation shared and all that.

“And the amount of (especially young) people”. I’m afraid for me it’s the number of people who say “amount” of people when they mean *number* of people. People are not coffee, tea, milk or other loose goods!

Yup, I forgot that one. I’ll raise you, overuse of the word ‘basically’ and my wife’s irritating new habit of answering any question she’s unsure of, with ‘I want to say..’

Up there with anyone under the age of thirty who asks a shop assistant, ‘Can I get?..’ rather than ‘Can I have?’ or ‘May I have?’ Whilst I’m having a right old moan, what happened to ‘he said’ ‘she said’ ‘I said’? It’s now become..and he was like, and she was like and I was like. Grinds my grumpy old gears

Don’t worry, my bad habits include “in terms of” - in fact I think the offenders might have copied it from me …

I’m a serial abuser of subordinating conjunctions (I had to Google that). I use though or although regularly, though not all the time 🙈

Sometimes "amount of people" is more appropriate than "number of people", but yep, not often. On the subject of people, just about everybody (young and old) says "less people" rather than "fewer people" - but that's an old one. The most recent ones that boil my gears are: How are you? I'm good, thanks. Would you like some more coffee? No, I'm good thanks. I'm excited for the weekend. And very popular with US State department spokespeople is "We cannot speak to the actions of the government at present"

And harassment. I blame Cagney and Lacey for bringing the US pronunciation to the UK.

"I'm not being funny". I know. At no point did I detect you were telling a joke. Bloody hell, just noticed someone already did this one. [Post edited 25 Oct 2024 22:42]

He's the one I was thinking of alright, often saying it more than once in the same sentence. As you say, once you've noticed it, you can't unhear it; almost as though you're unconsciously 'zoning in' on it!

By far the worst of these currently, is the use of the word "for" when they someone means "about". "Excited for" is just murdering the English language. Seriously. FO.

There is a sense in which excited for is correct, and I have heard it used that way, but I agree it shouldn't be used if excited about is meant. Here is an example from the following link. My best friend is getting married/has won a million dollars/is running for President, and I might say "Wow! I'm so excited for you". https://forum.wordreference.com/threads/excited-about-for.3173653/
