Delap or Hirst conundrum 09:57 - Oct 27 with 1456 viewsChocorange

We all know how good Delap has been , this season.
A real handful , powerful fast and strong.

However , It was noticeable yesterday that Hirst knows the way we play links and brings others into the game and is a good finisher too.

Up to yesterday’s game , we were the lowest on scoring XG all season , ( and the highest on XG against btw) , yet in yesterday’s game with Hirst starting we played very much like we have done in the last two seasons creating chances again and again.

While Delap is a real handful coming on as a sub against tiring defenders, other teams cannot understand how he didn’t start yesterday… was he injured? He didn’t look it.

Great to have options , but is there also a chance Delap could play on the right as he did at Hull , with Ogbene now out?

Team looks better when Hirst plays, Delap looks better himself when he plays.

I thought Delap on the right was a goer all year but it just leaves us empty off the bench for that number 9 role which doesn’t really work, so it’ll be on or the other (or a change of shape) until January you feel.

I think.
Burns on the right.
Chaplin in the 10.
Delap on the left.
Hirst up top.
Subs. Szmodics/Hutchinson/Clarke.

I don't think I'd spend a lot of time worrying about it, they were both excellent and hopefully therefore represent decent rotation options.

What i would worry about it is just how poor defensively we remain - and it isn't a 'this season' problem. I don't know whether we need to do some more coach scouting to help them play a little better as a defensive unit. Even if they're not always playing together.

Yeah, we are a striker short to play with both from the start. The problem you have with Ali is that the step up is hard enough for him anyway without expecting him to be making an impact off the bench for 15-20 mins here and there with no run of games.

I dont see it as a conundrum tbh. For me it's Hirst for first part of the game. His game / role/ style is in my view vastly underrated by so many.

He is deceptively quick, poses guile and movement, that pulls the CB's out of position and works them to death for 70 mins or so with his constant harrying.

Hirst is a natural at holding up play and facilitating the other forwards into the attack. There is movement all across the front line when he plays. With players such as Chaplin,
Burns, Omari, Broadhead ( I see no reason why you can't add Szmodics to this list), there is an almost telepathic interplay between them. This was very much evident yesterday. It looked like the old Ipswich front line
attacking ftom the previous 2 seasons,
working a very good Brentford side into a mesmerised standstill.

Play the first part of the match ad above, THEN bring on the explosive, hard-hitting, hard running, exoset shooting, Delap against a tiring defence like we did yesterday, and watch him tear them apart. Job done!

It's not a "competition" between the two, as to who should start of finish, it's about maximising the totally different attributes each player possess. They are different t types of striker.

Genuinely..... a nice problem.... amongst some quite worrying problems. Don't care, really..... horses for courses pick for McK

In fact, is this the only position -alongside Davis' position -nailed down?

All other positions are up for grabs, including Morsy's.
