Saturday's defensive show was out of character in recent games 10:01 - Dec 24 with 1703 views | Dubtractor | We can all agree that Saturday was horrible, and could easily have been a much worse scoreline, but worth keeping calm and bearing in mind that it was out of character with our recent defensive form. Since the start of November (excluding Saturday!) we'd conceded 8 goals in 7 games - the sort of defensive record that would give us an excellent chance of survival if we could maintain it, and no coincidence that we'd got 2 wins and 2 draws in that run of tighter defending. I don't think you can over state the impact of missing a proper physical number 9 with the system we play, it meant we had no real threat at all, and allowed Newcastle to press and press without the ball, and attack in greater numbers with it. Really does emphasise the importance of getting another proper striker option in January as we can't rely on Hirst being fit (a shame as I think he is excellent otherwise), and Al Hamadi, for all his endeavour, isn't at the standard we need at the moment. I think its also worth bearing in mind that both Southampton and Leicester have taken some hammerings recently - whilst that isn't something we want to aspire to, it's the reality of getting promoted to this league. It's the nature of a league in which virtually every team has world class goalscorers. Doesn't make you a bad team, we need to remember that.

Need someone up there with PL experience and know how. No idea if we even looked at him, but Jordan Ayew would have been a great signing for us in the summer

Wolves was a slightly better defensive performance but vs Brighton they actually created more than Newcastle. Again, big chances given up to Palace. It's not new, and ignoring a 5 game spell inbetween the start and now, we've not learnt whatsoever.

That's nonsense, to be frank. Wolves had a 15 minute spell after their goal, where they had a few half chances, buy otherwise created little.

Also bear in mind we were missing two of our best players in Delap and Tuanzebe, both of whom would have made a difference. Not saying we would have won but they would have given Newcastle something to think about. It’s credit to the team that this our first proper thrashing of the season, hopefully McKenna and his crew will see where we went wrong and sort it out. This is a seriously big test of a team like us that has come through 2 promotions to reach this level. Unfortunately sometimes you have accept you will come up against a really good team in really good form. Keep the faith!

Is it an inability to learn or is it just that we're playing against better sides with better players. If it was that easy to learn to shut out these teams everyone would be doing it.

Everton didn’t give us a lesson. They just outmuscled us at times and we were not at our best. Had VAR not intervened we would have been back to 1-1 and who knows what would have happened.
