Gaps to fill obvious last night 10:10 - Dec 28 with 2104 viewsKev_W

Defensively and mainly in midfield we are looking ok but last night magnified the areas where we carry too little threat:

Attacking /creative midfielder
Right sided replacement for Ogbene
Striker

Can we fill all of those in time to make an impact? Two out of three of those are probably must haves.

Huge issue we have is that Smozdics & Jack Clarke aren't being played in the positions that made them the best players in the Championship. You could probably argue Delap wasn't signed to be our no.9 but instead our RW, but needs must sees him having to play it every week.

Smozdics alongside Delap in the Scowie Johnson mould.
Davis to play more withdrawn to allow Jack Clarke to hug that left touchline and cause the same damage he did last season.

What I'd do anyway.

SS doesn't suit our style of play most of his goals were long balls over the top like the one he scored at Man City. Clarke and Hutch too lightweight for this division. Whilst Broadhead has looked good coming on think he's too lightweight as well will be interesting to see how he does when he starts a game.

We severely lack pace & power all over the pitch, sadly.

Delap totally wasn’t signed to play on the wing, that’s a misconception that seems to have gained life along some. Absolutely correct that he’s having to shoulder too much of a burden though. We need to get him some help quickly, regardless of Hirst’s condition.

We need as much help as we can get in that front 4. That needs to be where our investment is focused in January. I am a huge Hutchinson fan but he isn't ready to carry us in an attacking sense. He needs a bit of help and some pressure taken off his shoulders. And bar Delap, we really lack PL physicality in attacking areas.

I think we have 4 good CM options - we need to get Cajuste/Phillips on the pitch together much more in the second half of the season.

Defensively - possibly need a RB but Tuanzebe should be back fairly soon? And it's pretty damning for BJ if we do sign someone. Other than that, I think we are set and generally we've defended pretty well over the course of the first half of the season.

Not really. on 12:11 - Dec 28 with 1660 viewsGuthrum

It more magnified the fact that by reinforcing the back-line, we then lack the numbers to outmaneuver a very high quality defence at the other end of the pitch.

Our forward probes didn't break down through lack of skill, but because Davis or Hutchinson were faced with two or three opposition players and no viable passing option which was not vulnerable to being cut out. Optimistic balls into the box are just fodder for CBs and goalie, turning over possession and putting pressure back on our own defence.

The imbalance between Arsenal's longtime top-of-the-Prem squad and our recently promoted from League One outfit is not one that is going to be solved by a handful of January transfers. Compromises have to be made in games like that - either keeping the attacking setup and probably conceding a few, or reinforcing the defence and losing much (but not all) of our forward threat.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

With hutch being used as the 10
Broja close
Hirst already in
Delap in.

Delap would definitely play some games at right sided forward as he did for Hull. It wouldn't make sense to have two young strikers for the central role competing for that 1 space going up against another youngish striker too. Its hardly moving much to play delap in a position he played last season. No one is saying play him on the wing. That's a misconception.

a niche perspective

Szmodics is an issue for me. He's tenacious and very hard working, has a bit of football intelligence about him, which all means you want him in the team, but ultimately lacks physicality (like everyone admittedly) and genuine quality. He doesn't create anything and hasn't looked very dangerous when he's had half chances.

If I'm being particularly harsh I'd also say his goals at City and Brentford should have been saved. The Spurs goal was genius.

Thinking back to Fulham match and I was surprised by how solid there players were. Little fellas but our players bounced off them. I always remember burns going in hard on a tiny fellow and he came out the worst of the battle. Burns in the lower dibs was well solid too.

Have to say I’m with you, I do like him but he isn’t involved enough.

I have my reservations too. His endeavour and work rate are hugely impressive, but I think he's not at premier league level on the technical side.

He's not exactly a problem for us, but equally it feels like we've 3 players for that LW/inside forward role (Sammy, Clarke, Broadhead) and none of them really hit the mark for what we need.

Sammy's engine and work rate with Broadhead's technique would fit the bill perfectly!

Seems to me part of that role is to help make space for Leif, which means you sacrifice getting on the ball to help achieve that. Broady was often accused of not getting on the ball enough last season.

I think it is more physicality/athleticism than technical ability that is the problem in that left 10 role and generally across our front 4. Burns had that in the Championship but doesn't seem to in the PL. Hutchinson has the athleticism but can be bullied out of games. None of the 3 left 10 options have it.

I imagine there will be other interested clubs, but I would love to see us go and get Chukwuemeka in January. 6'2, powerful runner.

That size and physicality is what Villa saw in Morgan Rogers even though he wasn't ripping up trees at Boro.
