Philogene linked again! on 15:37 - Jan 2 with 1939 views | _clive_baker_ | This must be the 3rd time in 4 windows we've chased him. Excellent player though, he's one I was desperate for us to get in the summer. On a perm it would be a really great signing IMO, be interesting to see where he fits in though as I'm used to seeing him on the left where we already have Szmodics, Clarke and Broadhead.

Looking at highlight vids he has spent a fair bit on the right and someone has mentioned he's played wingback too so think cover for ogbene sounds about right.

Philogene linked again! on 14:26 - Jan 2 by HighgateBlue | Yes, I appreciate Philogene has not been a success at Villa (there'd be no chance of him being available to us if he had...), but as I say, a Philogene firing like he did at Hull would be fantastic. I know it takes time to integrate into a system, and the Prem is a (big) step up, but I think JClarke has been the most disappointing of our summer signings. He was so lauded at Sunderland and seemed a very exciting signing. Also, he's 24, so he does need to be cracking on with his career. He's no raw teenage talent. He's seemed physically lightweight and also the end product has been lacking. Having signed him as a second choice behind Philogene, if we then go back in for Philogene in Jan, he's got to be worried! It's too soon to hope that Sunderland get promoted and buy him back, but very underwhelmed so far. |
I take you point but it's another big if ... 'If he can get back to Hull form' .. it's the exact same situation as Clarke. If Clarke can replicate Sunderland form then we would all be delighted and we would be in a fundamentally better position. They've both been great in the Championship and failed to produce in the Prem. He might come in, he might be a superb signing. However, to date Villa fans feel the same about him as we do about Clarke, lacking end product. Absolutely trust in Ashton & McKenna but shipping out Clarke for someone in the same situation would be madness IMO.

Forgot that we were in for him in the summer of 2023 as well.

You'd imagine Broadhead would be one to sacrifice and he goes straight in as L10 ahead of Szmodics for most games. Clarke not really cut it so far, but can't go elsewhere and will get persisted with more as a big money signing but we can't really hang about and wait for him to find his feet this season

Clarkes not playing the role he did at Sunderland. With philogene.. his form you guess would depend again on how we ask him to play.

Think we will loan clarke back to Sunderland and keep broady now. In bench appearences and his start v Chelsea broadhead looks miles ahead of clarke in regards to being a positive on the pitch. ( minus clarkes corner)

So the answer is to loan Clarke back to Sunderland where he will then go back to being a touchline winger with the intention of then asking him to play Inside forward when he comes back for pre-season? It makes no sense at all to do that and then ask Philogene to play a role he also isn't massively familiar with presuming he plays inside left. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I don't really know the answer to clarke. We've got j clarke. Szmodics. Broady for the left side. Philiogene potentially as left cover but probably more for right if we do get him. From that list. Who's possibly a waste of a squad space for this season only. Sammy. Broady. Clarke? For me clarkes the only one from that three that hasn't shown anything this season starts or bench appearences.

IMO the answer is to let those three keep battling it out. They've all showed glimpses. Clarke vs Villa/ Everton, Szmodics vs Brentford/ Spurs, Broady vs Arsenal/ Chelsea. If we go down, Clarke will be a huge player for us next year. The answer can't be to give up on someone you spent 15M on 6 months ago. If we get Philogene in, then surely it's to play down the right predominately (which is what he's been for villa) but that doesn't make much sense if we continue with more of a back 5.

I don’t fully agree that Philogene on the right would be surplus to requirements with a back five - surely we will need more or less attacking versions of that formation - we will not be needing the same attributes versus Arsenal than we will against Everton.

Philogene linked again! on 14:28 - Jan 2 by davblue | I disagree with you on that, he has the profile that fits the role in our team, dribbler, right footed, cuts inside. I just think for whatever reason so far he's not got it tactically. I said at the time, im not sure he's got the physical attributes for the premier league, but i hope he comes good, he needs a run of games which unfortunately we can't give him at this current time because of our position. He might be one that needs a full pre season with us and time to understand what we need. Really hope he comes good because we've seen little glimmers. |
It might be that confidence, or a lack of it, is playing a big part. Had he scored that early goal instead of blazing over (can't remember who that was against, Villa?) or had the penalty against Everton not been overturned, there's every chance that we would have seen a greater contribution from him recently.
