Scientists have produced a cow that produces less methane when it farts. Only 1%, but it’s apparently a genetic variant that will be passed down, so her offspring will produce 1% less than her 1% reduction, etc.

Clever blighters. I wonder if it works on wives?

Seaweed is the way to go ( could work on the missus too! ).

It's burping which is the issue rather than farting, I believe. Although, as a country dweller, I suppose preventing cows farting is beneficial whether it impacts climate change or not.

That is correct. A huge amount of work is being done on feedstocks for livestock to cut methane emissions from ‘burping’. It may seem a joke but livestock account for over 11% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

I know it's an amusing story and I am sure we could all do with producing less emissions on a Sunday morning but in reality it's a real issue.

Globally, agriculture produces more methane than the oil and gas industry and the majority of that is from animal emissions and whilst methane is a short-lived greenhouse gas it's effects are ~30x that of CO2.

Obviously a good argument to be made here by the veggies that eating less meat reduces the problem but in reality that is unlikely to happen.
