'My sons support West Ham and my husband supports Arsenal but they've decided to follow Ipswich now because it's local isn't it. It's quite exciting cos they are doing so well.'

Makes me smile. We are less than 3.5 years from Demolition Man.

On a Liverpool Street bound train? Tell em’ we don’t want them, glory hunters! Just like any of the tossers you see at Ipswich station in spam shirts when they’re at home.

Yes! It is pretty amazing how they've all come out of the woodwork isn't it. The thing I don't get is it can't be at all enjoyable really - the reason we are all floating on air is because we sat through all the dross and despair for years.

I guess the telling thing is whether they go back to supporting those teams if we are relegated and don’t bounce back immediately.

Sort of ironic because I much prefer the EFL to the PL, better at atmospheres without the plastics, tourists, corporates, and tourist fans. No VAR, anyone can beat anyone, and more televised games. I we end up established in the PL with years of waiting lists and £100 general admission I’d more like my go support another team (only it would be my local non league team)!

I know what you mean. Very sadly the PL has become a product that people consume like a dreadful Marvel franchise. EFL is much better. But even that is being corrupted. The Prem teams who go down are just too strong.

They don't support anyone. They've picked a team and can happily pick another for a few months. I feel sorry for people like this who will never know the true feeling of supporting a team.

Yep. I can't understand it. What's the point? It's football as mild diversion, because it's trendy suddenly.

It's good we're attracting new support and young support but the glory hunters are difficult to take!!!

People change lots of things in life.

Their job, career, nationality, gender, religion, political allegiance, name, car, home, hobbies but you don't ever change your football team.

These people are not football fans, merely interlopers who are following us whilst it is an enjoyable experience. They will move on no doubt as/when.

Enjoy the match, at least with the away ticket scheme you know all those around you will be blues who have put in the hard yards in times when we were a lot less fashionable.

Edit. Can see others have already made the point! Either way. Have fun today.

Poll: This new lockdown poll - what you reckon?

Overhead on a train just now... on 10:13 - Jan 5 with 3663 viewsSuffolkNClose

As a kid born and bred in Suffolk I supported Liverpool - had all the shirts etc.
Then the year we went up in 2000 my dad got me an Ipswich season ticket.

Was definitely glory hunting, loved going to PR to watch Liverpol, United, Chelsea and all these big names coming to town.

But got hooked on town - and have had a season ticket every year since.

Some of these fans will drift away if we go down. But what a chance to create the new era of lifelong Blues.

Cheers! Interlopers is exactly right. In a way it's sad - they don't know what they are missing!

Hope we can get a result. Would be big after yesterday's results.

Tho how many of today's long-term fans were first attracted by the glory of Ipswich Town under Ramsey, Robson and Burley?

Some will fall by the wayside (should we once again fall into the lower divisions), but others will retain the connection and pass it onto their children.

Yes, that's true. And it's definitely a good sign that we're attracting them in a way... It's not a conversation that was happening as we plummeted down league one...

To get younger fans to maybe permanently switch allegiance the prioritisation of tickets has been dumped so they can stand a chance of getting to a game. I get this as a business plan to widen our future support base, but it doesn’t make great bed fellows with those who have been on the longer journey through thick and thin, and who now can’t attend as much as they used to.

That's me, although in my case I lived in Ipswich for 2 years whilst at college, I'd never been interested in football before (age 22-23 at the time) but I caught the local fever!

Was chatting to a mate the other day that supported Ipswich up until he moved near Highbury and got a ticket to watch with his son. Now a full on gooner, so sad.

Success does breed support tho

Being in surrey. My son was chelsea due to his cousins this way all supporting them.

The last few years have transformed him into a town supporter. Wearing club colours. Buying club merch. Watching every game.

He loves them and now hates chelsea. I love it.

This describes me - an 8 year old in 1975 captivated by our FA Cup QF battles with Leeds and fed up with all my friends supporting Liverpool. Fifty years later I’m still ‘hunting the glory’ and if that offends people I really don’t care. My two sons both support Ipswich and like me have season tickets (and have had for years) despite living in Yorkshire.

There are plenty in the stands like me. I am old enough to remember Crawford playing in a Town shirt. We need the youngsters to get on board now and hope, that if we do go down, they stick with us and follow Town for the rest of their lives. Can't see us going back to L1 (have said that before mind) so even if we are Championship for a season or two, hopefully they all stay loyal and the future of this club is secured.

Guilty as charged Guthers.
I was a 7 year old glory hunter in 78.
I very nearly switched allegiance to Forest in 79, but stuck with the Town and never looked back.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

For those who don't live in or very near to Ipswich, I have great admiration for following us. It wasn't even an option for me to support anybody else. Even without the Ramsey years, I would still have supported my local club. (not for one second suggesting that everybody should)

My story is slightly different.

Born in the West Country I followed Plymouth Argyle as the 'local' team. I got to know Paul Mariner who lived close to us, and took an interest in Town when he made the move. Most of my family supported ManU (and Argyle too), and I was never one to follow the crowd.

That was the beginning of my Town journey, and I've supported them ever since. I've now lived in East Anglia for most of my life since leaving school for UEA (good for being close to Portman Road, but also uncomfortably close to the budgies), apart from a couple of periods when work took me elsewhere. But nothing has ever swayed me from supporting Town since that initial hook. I've also been lucky enough to know Martijn Reuser in my time, so no chance I'll ever be swayed...

I guess we owned the A12 corridor for many years. The current unavailability of tickets won’t help build the actual footfall but the current trajectory might help build the affinity and longer term following.

Agree. I also think we have a lot of ‘sleepers’ (loyal fans who wake up when we’re doing well).

My brother has supported Ipswich all his life but likes to do it from a distance. He reads match reports, watches us if we’re on the telly and defends us by the photocopier on a Monday morning. But he won’t ever take a regulars match day ticket as he has no loyalty points and he has other interests and commitments.

We’re very different people and don’t talk often. Between Burley and McKenna we barely talked Ipswich at all but this squad has him texting me 24 hours before every game and during matches. It’s just another reason I’m grateful for our current success.

I have to thank my Chelsea born dad, who moved to suffolk in 1950.
He told me about the joy of going to see your local team.
He was'nt wrong, have loved most of my time watching town since late 60's.
