Sorry if this has already been discussed but do we think our willingness to spend a lot of money this month is related to how well delap's doing? Are we now planning to sell him for 70-80m in the summer and spending that money already? Not saying it's a bad idea. If someone offers that monry, it could set the club up for years.

No, I don’t think so. It’s more likely to be a real attempt to simply stay up and then push on as per Brighton, Forest, etc.

Poll: Right now, who would you rather have as Prime Minister?

Agreed.

The first season is the biggest hurdle, and we're not far off at all. It makes sense to go big this January to try and make it stick, as there's absolutely no guarantee that we'd bounce straight back if we do go down.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Yes, oddly second season used to be harder to stay up than first but that is not the case in last few years.

Absolutely yes - very very surprised if we can hit psr limits without selling by 30/6

I guess we’ll see. MA did say in an interview (with TalkSport I think) that they have a spreadsheet with each players valuation, and that it’s regularly updated etc.

Curious to know how much we can spend without breaking any rules.

We have owners and investors who have set us up for years already! 70/80 M for one player isn’t going to make much difference in the scheme of things.

Our recruitment model targets a certain profile of player (Delap, Omari, Greaves, AAH, previously Davis, now this window Philogene) that can be developed relatively quickly into high value assets. These are all young players with little to no Premier league experience but very high potential, and we're spreading the bet across the group that some will come good.

This IMO is safest in year one, because even if they don't pull up trees they're gaining experience at the level which they didn't have previously: £20m player with no prem apps + prem apps = offsets some depreciation from poor-to-average performances.

Too early for one of them? Fab, we'll hold on to you if we're relegated and you'll develop in the league below with us (AAH) or you we'll get you a loan.

If some of the group do well, hold their own in the league, their value will rise.

Throw 15 goal contributions for any one of those players into the mix and you're likely to make a tidy profit, even if you're selling on the way down.

The issue with spending that profit in January is that your star man might cut a thumb off while washing up and miss the rest of the season - so simply, we are not. The forecasting will be done on the worst case, not the best.

I think there's an argument that selling at the right time has been as important to brighton as their excellent recruitment.

The owners are limited on what they can put in. PSR dictates that we must keep below the permitted losses, and selling players helps balance the books. It is also crucial for allowing investment in new players.

No argument here, the OP said it “would set the club up for years” as if that is the only way we can survive.

A good question. Whilst apart from Clarke all our costly signings could be sold - to have to sell Delap before 30/6 does have an impact on his valuation. If we breach PSR we’d have to sell whether we stay up or go down.
